TEAM’S LATE ARRIVAL
MATCH LOST BY DEFAULT UMPIRES’ DECISION UPHELD WHANGAREI, Jan. 24. The explanation was given by a delegate from the Hikurangi Cricket Club at a meeting of the committee of the Whangarei and District Cricket Association last evening that the late arrival of the Hikurangi team for a match last Saturday was due to unsuccessful efforts to locate the key to the shed in which the gear was kept. It was ultimately necessary to force the lock, by which time the quarter of an hour of grace had expired. The incident arose last Saturday at Hikurangi in the match against Nomads. At the expiry of the 15 minutes’ grace allowed the Hikurangi team was not ready to commence the game. The umpires, Messrs. G. H. Grant and S. Pearson, declared the match won by default and awarded the three points to Nomads, j The Hikurangi Club entered a pro tost against the decision and appealed to the association. Mr. J. Hamilton, a delegate and caplain of the Hikurangi chib, said the reason for the late start was the inability to procure the gear. The team took the field ultimately and played the game, because the club had the right to appeal to the association. The game wa s wo n by ’Hikurangi. Mr. 11. J. Lawrence said the Hiku ! rangi club had been an offender in the past and he moved that the umpires’ ! decision be upheld. | On the casting vote of the chairman ihe umpires’ decision was upheld. The Hikurangi club was given the right to appeal to the North Auckland Association.
