Alarm has been caused by an order that all Hcimwchr troops should arm in case they are needed to protect Austro-German frontiers. ANXIETY IN ROME REPERCUSSIONS LIKELY ROME, July 1. The German trouble is causing grave anxiety. There arc fears of repercussions in Centra] Europe as, if the central government is weakened, the extremists on the Austrian frontier may embark on a violent campaign against /Austrian independence. HITLER'S COUP SIGNIFICANCE NOT CLEAR WHAT PUBLIC ARE TOLD BERLIN, July 1. Amid the welter of reports it is still difficult to distinguish the actual significance of Herr Hitler’s coup, but the public arc being persuaded that a long overdue purge of treacherous elements has been carried out. It is still not clear to what extent drastic action was taken against Herr von Papen and his followers. The Reichswehr is apparently aloof and has not yet definitely acted. Headquarters have refused to comment on the situation. SCHLEICHER’S INTRIGUE SUPPRESSION OF MUTINY REACTIONS EXPECTED LONDON, July 1. The Sunday Express Berlin corre .spondent says that the whole career of General von Schleicher had been one of wire-pulling, intrigue and plots. This time he was plotting with Roehm to return to power. Their programme was a new campaign of terror against the Jews and action against the Junkers and capitalists. The plot failed, bui the suppression of this mutiny will seriously undermine the authority of the Nazi regime and may have serious effects in the coming days when the shortage of footstulls and raw ma- j terials is expected to be combined with ■ sweeping wage reductions throughout the country. NO CRITICISM ALLOWED BROWN SHIRTS ON HOLIDAY BERLIN, July I. The Reichswehr leader, Herr Blom- | berg, has ordered the removal of yesterday’s state of emergency. He declares that the navy and army loyally supported Herr Hitler. General Goering is forbidding Storm Troops to criticise the shootings or discuss his actions. The Brown Shirts are still on uniformlcss furlough. They must, not leave their homes or hold meetings. It is generally considered that Hen Heinos and Herr Ernst wildly abused their rapid rise to power. Herr Heines was sentenced to death, but pardoned. HITLER PRAISED GERMAN PRESS SUPPORT j BERLIN, July 1. ' The Press whole-heartedly supports ! Herr Hitler, whose blow it declares was j carried out at the psychological mo-j ment, earning the gratitude of the en-; tire people, similar to General Goering’s i former suppression of Communism and Marxism. SIMPLE LIFE FOR STORM TROOP LEADERS HITLER’S DEFINITE ORDERS BERLIN, July 1. Herr Hitler’s orders to Herr Lutzc demand that the Storm Troops shall be recognised so that every leader behaving badly in public shall ruthlessly be excluded. The loaders must be examples of simplicity and must not give opulent dinners when millions of their countrymen lack the essentials of living. “I forbid the leaders giving diplomatic dinners (w - hich evidently refers to Herr Roehm’s recent lavish enter-
tainments of foreign diplomats and newspapermen). Loaders who got drunk in public are unworthy of their posts Leaders causing tows as the result of excesses will be mercilessly removed.” General Goering announces that order has boon established everywhere and that the majority of the people remain brave and ready to sacrifice and stand behind Herr Hitler. POSITION OF THE JEWS NO SIGN OP JUSTICE LONDON, July 1. Mr. Neville Laski told the Jewish Board of Deputies that tho position of tho Jews in Germany was apparently unaltered. Though the careers of certain notorious anti-semites, inclduing Herr Heine’s, had ended, thcro was no sign of the arrival of a more just regime.
