NATURE OF REVOLT

DIFFICULT TO DECIDE A SURVEY FROM LONDON ;By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, July 1. From the welter of contradictory statements arriving from Berlin it is not easy to decide whether the Storm Troopers’ revolt was military, political, or reactionary; but it can be revealed that well-informed circles in London were long aware there of the waning enthusiasm for Hitlerism. There was no longer the same zest in giving the “Hail Hitler!” salute in the streets. More significant was the fact that the industrialists were less enthusiastic about the trend of things, fearing that National Socialism might develop into something nearer the Moscow brand. Von Papen’s suppressed speech and then the campaign against carpers and critics were apparently seized bv the Brown House as a side issue to mask both the. impending curtailment of Brown Shirt leaders’ powers and Hitler’s professed knowledge that, he knew revolt was brewing. Events moved so quickly on Friday night that- Hitler’s hand was forced. Judging from to-day’s comparative calm in Berlin and Munich the second revolt was nipped in the bud. Apropos General Goering’s description last week of critics and carpers as “stinkpots.” it can be stated that disquieting stories have long been filtering through to London of the prevalence of revolting moral Tierversions in high places in Berlin. Tlriler was not included in these, nor were the carpers, but the wonder was often expressed as tn how long Hitler could afford to be silent in the of the damaging stories. His speech at Munich on Saturday indicated that they were not • holly lacking in foundation. TWO DISTINCT PLOTS RIGHT AND LEET WINGS CONFLICTING REPORTS BERLIN. July 1. Conflicting reports indicate that Hitler struck at two distinct, plots— Roehm’s conspiracy, supported by Left Wing Nazis, and the Junker Reichswehr plans with which von Papen and von Schleicher were associated. Though the aims of the two sets of conspirators differed widely, it is impossible in the absence of authoritative reports to say how far they were aware of each other’s plans and to what extent they attempted to use each other for their own purposes. It is stated from a diplomat?.* source that the actual cause- of the plot was the Storm Troopers’ belief that Hitler and his associates contemplated a drastic reorganisation of the Brown Shirts after the holiday, suspending thousands of men and merging thousands of others into the Reichswehr in order to form a new militia of 300,000 for which the Government is striving. ’l'wo more of von Papen ’s adjutants arc reported to have committed suicide. It is rumoured that General von Goerring will replace von Paper as Vice<'hanvellor. though officially it is denied that von Papen has rcs’gned. roe:;;i shot dead WOULD NOT SHOOT HIMSELF HITLER S DRAMATIC TRIP BERLIN, July 1. It is officially slated that. Herr XiOehui was to-day g.ven an opportunity ul taking the tunsequcuccs of his aci.on, namely he was handed a revolver with which he waf ikri'.cd to •ommit suicide. He refused and was shot dead. Herr Goebbels opened to-night’s broadcast with a picture of Herr Hitler .standing on the terrace at his hotel at Godcsberg after midnight un Juno 29 gaz rig at the dark sky, faithful to ais principles. “No one can tell what threatens, ; ut he is full of determination against reactionary rebels who are plunging the nation into turmoil.” Herr Goebbels dramatically continued: “Reports arrive at Berlin from Munich. A decision is swif’ly made. Wc start at 2 a.m. and are at Munich at 4 a.m., when Herr Hitler receives reports and interviews rebels. He hurls his anger in their pale faces, rips off their badges, and decides to enter the lions’ den. We were rushed i»y motor to Liessee and entered Herr Roehm’s house unchallenged. Herr Hitler intrepidly effects arrests and later confronts the personal staff, who arrived from Munich, and orders them to return. Subsequently he speaks to the Storm Troop leaders, hastening to the rebel conference, declaring that his patience is at an end.” Herr Goebbels added: “Every hand lifted against the Hitler regime will be broken. Everyone rising up will be knocked down. The whole world is now aware that Germany is calm and orderly. Never was a leader so much master of the situation.” The Murtemberg Nazis have issued a statement, emphasising the heaviness of the burden of the Storm Troopers’ blindly obedient leaders, on learning that the Chief of Staff and his associates had broken their word of honour. The statement added that the Wurtomburg Storm Troops would stand and die for Herr Hitler. They demand the head of every rebel.

MORE EXECUTIONS EYE-WITNESS - REPORT BERLIN, July 1. Ten more leaders have been executed, their names being withheld. An eye-witness of the executions of seven Storm Troop leaders, including Ernst, Hemes and Streti, says that they were summarily court-mar-tialled at the headquarters of Herr Hitler’s black bodyguard and sentenced to death within half an hour. Their wrists were tied with twine, they were led out in the darkness and lined up against a wall. The majority declined to be blindfolded^^ - - A volley crashed out to the ron of drums.
