WAVERLEY

CROQUET CLOSING FUNCTION. On Thursday the members of the Croquet Club met on the lawns for the purpose of holding a competition afternoon. The secretary, Mrs. Pepper, had been most active in arranging the lawns and had carefully marked them out for zig-zag, ladder and angles, and 20 shots. The games were soon under way and kept going till 3 p.m.. when a break was made for afternoon tea, which was a feature of the day, the committee being entertained by the other members. The table decorations carried out in shades of red toning to brown. After the games the annual meeting was held on the lawns, the president explaining that the reason for holding it there was to ensure a good attendance. Mrs. Pepper then read the minutes of th« last annual meeting and also gave a summary of activities during the season. Votes of thanks were accorded the donors of trophies. Mesdames Palmer. Muir. Pepper and Miss Cheyne and also to those who donated prizes for closing day, Mesdames Alexander, Shearman, Mathieson and Miss Lupton. The election of officers resulted: — President, Miss Cheyne; vice-president, Mrs. Gavin Alexander; secretary, Mrs. R. P. Palmer; tea committee, Mrs. Bromiley: general committee. Mesdames Muir and Pepper and Miss Cleary. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded *” the retiring secretary Mrs. Pepper, who had carried out her duties most ably during the last three years. The trophies were then presented. Handicap doubles: Mesdames Muir’s and Palmer’s trophies were won by Mesdames Pepper and Wilson; runnersup. Mesdames Hodgson and Thompson. The senior single handicap. Miss Cheyne’s trophy, was won by Mrs. Pepper; Mrs. Palfner runner-up. Junior handicap. Mrs. Pepper’s trophy was won by Mrs. Salter. The competitions during the afternoon resulted: Ladder, Mrs Palmer; zig-zag, Miss McMeckin; angles, Cleary; 20 shots, Miss Cleary. WAVERLEY DANCING STUDIO • A most enjoyable long-night dance was held at the Waverley Dancing Studio, Town Hall buildings, last Friday evening. The cosy studio was decorated in blue and gold streamers and bowls of flowers, and the walls were gay with coloured balloons. Modern and old-time dancing and games were indulged in by the big crowd of dancers present. Misses Nan eye and Francis Bridges gave a finished demonstration of the “Croqn,” the most fascinating of modern dances, and the audience emphatically demanded a repetition. They also danced the Lancashire Clog. A tasty supper was served and the M.C. announced that similar dances would be held monthly, and the Tuesday evening ballroom and tap dancing classes would be as usual. Extras were played by Mrs HayVock and Mr Sinclair. TENNIS CLOSING The Waverley lawns were the scene of great activity on Saturday afternoon when a Yankee tournament marked the close of the tennis season. The games were well organised and were run in two divisions with sealed handicap. Miss Margaret Alexander and the Rev. S. R. Gardiner were the winners, There were many visitors from Patea and Waitotara Clubs and the weather was perfect for tennis. On the tea table in the pavilion, holding scarlet floral decorations, was the trophy recently won by the Waverlev Club’s intermediate team in competition with Patea. The following are details of the scores:—Miss M. Alexander and Rev. S. R. Gardiner, 131 J (174 handicap) r. Mrs T. E. Roberts and Fred Hopkinson, 1164 (223), runners-up; Miss Newland and E. Dickie, 116 (15); Miss Barrow and D. Newland, 1124 (224); Miss Campbell and Dr. Graves. 112 (35). TENNIS SOCIAL EVENING Members of the tennis •club met on Friday evening at St. Stephen’s Schoolroom. Bridge, euchre and other card games were played at .14 tables, about 70 members attending. Dr. Graves (president), welcomed the visitors and members and congratulated the club on a successful season about to end. Supper was served, after which the club prizes for the season were presented as follows by Mrs Graves: Combined handivan doublcs(Mr W. Muir’s trophy), Aliss Mason and D. Craig; ladies’ doubles (Mr Fred Hopkinson’s Misses Diekip and Evenson; men’s doubles (Rev. S. R. Gardiner’s trophy), Messrs Craig and Taylor. Bridge prizes for the evening were won by Mrs Thomson. Mrs MeWilliam, Mr P. Bremer, and Mr A. E. Symes. CROQUET The Waverley eroquet ladies held their official closing day on Thursday. Miss K. Cleary won two of the day’s competitions—2o shots and the trail. Mrs R. P. Palmer won “Aunt Sally” and Miss McMeckin “angles.” During the afternoon on Saturday, members showed their appreciation of their president’s (Miss I. Cheyne’s) interest in the club by presenting .her with a ‘cut crystal rose bowl. Miss Cheyne, who has hold this position for many vears, thanked the members for their kindness. Mrs Palmer is the new sperotarv a 'Ote of appreciation ll'ing recorded of Mrs Pepper’s work as late secretary. FOOTBALL PATEA v. WAVERLEY. The first games of the season were played on Saturday in hot surnrrnr weather, when a practice match between Patea and Waverley at Waverlev was a good even game. There were only four old seniors in the Patea team, and many new members. Nevertheless, the forwards ‘combined fairlv well. Waverley forwards played a good, hard game and the pa*ck

worked well together. Walker, who was playing a very sure game, kicked three penalties for Waverley, C. Gudgeon scoring the first, try for Patea. Later Edwards scored twice, Bourke converting each time. The ground was very hard. The score, at the. end of the game was Patea 1, Waverley 9. Mr W. Fitzgibbons was referee. Juniors This match, played at Patea, was rather one-sided, though Patea fielded only 14 players in the first half. The score finished at 9 to nil against Patea. Patea will be sending one team, at least, to the ten-a-sidc tournament at Manaia next Saturday. PERSONAL Mrs Hayes is visiting her sister, Mrs Barrow. Aliss I. Bayfield, Wellington, is on holiday at Waverley, and is staying with Mrs Gavin Alexander, ‘‘Buenos Ayres. ’ ’ Mrs P. Bremer returned last week to her home after a holiday in Wellington. Mrs White is the guest of her sister, Mrs W. Mrewer, “ Waihou.”
