HITHER AND THITHER

A social and dramatic club has been formed recently in Aramoho, and the first afternoon party of the daytime section of the club was held in St. Laurence’s Church Hall, Aramoho on Thursday afternoon, April 4, when Mcsdames H. B. Cave, J. Proude and Miss F. Sampson were hostesses. A short sketch was given by Mrs. Proude and Misses B. Moss and Davidson. Competitions were held and won by Mrs. W. Davidson and iMss F. Sampson. Those present included Mcsdames C. R. White, K. H. Cave, Hall, H. B. Cave, Proude, Sidney Smith, Field, S. Scott, Fromont, Davidson, Misses H. Robinson, Sampson, Wilkie, Moss, P. Davidson. Antidote to Boredom.

The problem of finding “a practical antidote to boredom’’ for gir’.s employed on repetitive work in a firm’s mills was solved six years ago (wrote a correspondent to a London paper). The loud speakers installed throughout the packing rooms have provided musical items from gramophone records ever since. Tho increase in all-round efficiency has been remarkable, tho firm’s output having increased by over 10 per cent. There has been a noticeable improvement, too, in the health of the employees.

Surprise Party. On Friday evening a particularly enjoyable and real surprise party was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. T. Browne, Gonvillc, in honour of their silver wedding. Music, competitions and a “wedding repast” made the evening the complete success it was. The guests of honour were tho recipients of a lovely gift from their unexpected but welcome visitors. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brown and family; Mr. and Mrs. Garland Jones, Miss G. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. F. Webb Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Jones, Rev. and Mrs. Spencer, Miss Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Withers, Mr. and Mrs. McKinnon, Mr. and Mrs. Merric, Mr. and Mrs. Drake, Mr. and Mrs. Hartnell, Mr. and Mrs. Stevens, Air. and Airs. Because it has received the sanction of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, and so is assured of an official welcome in dancing circles throughout tho world, a new dance called the Croon is likely to achieve great popularity as the new ballroom variation for tho tho 1933-34 season, states an exchange. Tho Croon is tho first serious effort to match tho popular “crooning” dance band rhythm of tho day, in which most of the latest dance hits arc composed. It is designed to the rhythm of a slow fox-trot, played at 36-38 bars a minute; and another interesting feature is that it is ideal for the “crush” dancing that is rendered necessary on the postage stamp dance floors of some of London’s smartest clubs and restaurants. A complete movement can, if desired, be carried out in a circle of two feet radius, and it is possible to perform a whole series of graceful, simple steps without bumping. Air. Charles Scrimshaw and Aliss Phyllis Kaylor (the originator) have had a special platform constructed of these dimensions, on which they demonstrate the new dance. Social Evening at Gonville. Tho Gonvillc Bowling Club held its weekly function in the Alasonic Hall on Friday night. The “500’’ prizes were won by Airs. Cooper and Airs. Christensen, consolations going to Airs. Alorton and Air. Berryman. After supper a happy time was spent in old-time dancing, the Monte Carlo prizes going to Aliss Christensen and Mr. Chenery. It was announced that the usual function would bo resumed next Saturday. Amongst (hose present, were: Air. and
