COVENT GARDEN PARTY
NOVEL ATTRACTIONS. The. garden party arranged on Saturday afternoon in the beautiful grounds of the Convent, St. John’s Hill, in aid of the Spanish Queen Carnival stall, proved as successful as it was novel. Its novelty lay in tho combination of a programme of dancing with a mannequin parade of fashions, and both were enjoyed to their fullest extent. The Convent children gave sevoral folk dances to music provided by a gramophone, and small pupils of Aliss Vivienne Healy contributed several delightful dances in costume. Gaily decorated stalls laden with produce of all kinds, cakes, fancy work, sewing, ice creams, etc., were placed on the lawn and the members of the committee in charge had a busy afternoon. Many helpers gave their services with competitions, amusements and the serving of afternoon tea. The weather was perfect for an out-of-door function and the pretty and extensive grounds with their stately old trees, green lawns and flower gardens were looking their best in the bright sunshine. Throughout tho afternoon and also for the mannequin parade, the Wanganui Garrison Band played enjoyable selections. The assistance given by the band was keenly appreciated. Great interest was displayed in the baby show and the judge—a visiting Plunket nurse—had a difficult task, as there were so many bonny entrants. The winners were as follows:—Under 12 months. Dawn Rushton and Earl Crotty tied for first place; over 12 months. Donald lan Stewart 1 and Rosalie Burke 2.
