DANCE RECITAL

An interesting programme of dances was given by the pupils of Miss Muriel Swann at their annual recital held in the Wanganui East Town. Hall on Wednesday evening before an appreciative audience. Some of the outstanding performances were given by Irene Barlow r and the frocking was very effectiv*. 'lhe programme opened with a lovely ballet, “In a Forest Glade,” given by the junior pupils, J. and K. Ralph, S. Webster, S. Robbie, E. Hawke, R. Healey, N. Cornwell, D. Annabell, F. Healey (as the rabbit), and P. Dewstow. Then followed the “Broken Doll,” by P. Healey; “Irish Fair,” by R. Palmer, J. Springfield, R. Willing (j‘b rs )» Barlow, L. Swann (reel); “Wild Rose,” given by J. Abernethy; “Grandma’s Locket,” by P. and R. Healey; “Pale Moon,” by Pauline Dewstuw; and “To a Miniature,” by P. McNaught, J. and K. Ralph, N. Carveil, S. Webster, R. Robbie, E. Hawke and D. Annabel (soloist). Irene Bar low danced the Sean Truitbhas to bagpipe musiic played by Pipe-major Thompson, and next came “Swords,’ by E. Davis, R. Willing and J. Springfield. “Pamela’s Garden” was tne next item, given by J. R. P. Healey, M. McLeay, R. Palmer, J. Beaumont (white butterfly), and J. Abernethy, lhe dancers beiug dressed as roses, orchids, forget-me-nots, etc. C. Bridge and partner danced te Maxina, and tim first part was concluded by a Highland Fling by M. McLeay, H. Congrievc and J. Healey, and a Highland Keel by R. Willing, P. Dewstow, 1. Barlow and E. Davis. Tho second part of tho programme was opened by the beautiful ballet, “Le Cygnc,” for which effective costmes of swansdown and feathers were worn by J. Barlow, as the swan, and J. Abernethy, I’. Healey, R. Dalmer and R. Healey as the cygnets, who gav e a good interpretation. The “ Russian Cossack,” by K. W ling and E Davis and “Christmas Lilies,” given by I. Barlow and P. Dewstow were delightful items and beautifully frocked. J. (Springfield gave a hornpipe, R. P. J Healey, “Book Ends and Coliimoinc,” and R. Palmer, “Tho Pirate King” and “Fling.” An effective Dutch scene, “Schneiders and Volandams,” was portrayed by I’. J. and R. Healey. The “Military” ballet was also very pretty and was performed by I. Barlow, J. Healey, McLeay, J. Beaumont, P. Dewstow and J. McKinnon. At the end of the programme was introduced a “Spirit of Christmas’’ ballet, those taking part being M. McLeay (carnival), J. Healey (tap dance), J. Springfield (skipping), J. Peters, I. Barlow, P. Dewstow, E. Davis (Reel o’ Tollach). The ballets and solo items were performed very creditably and the pretty and effective costuming added much to the success of tho items. Miss Cornyns was the able accompaniste and assisting were Lilian Swann and little Joy Springfield, of thcßracmar School of Dancing, Napier. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES WANGANUI EAST TENNIS CLUB At a meeting of tho committee In last Tuesday, special mention was made by tho president, Mr. E. Walpole, of tho excellent work done by tho social committee and it in organising tho garden party held recently, and which was such an unqualified success. The Queen Alexandra Band, which did so much towards enlivening the day, has decided the grounds arc idciil for a moonlight, concert and dance, and have plans iu. hand to run one in aid of their contest funds. Tho following competitions arc now finalised: Lampshade, Mrs. W. Ken drick; Christmas caike, Mrs. Cowie; ham, Rua Seal; dressed doll, Mrs. Mot fatt; turkey, A. Burston; tea cosy, No. 1, Miss Russell; No. 2, E. S. Hawkins; blue and gold cushion, W. Ryland; box chocolates, Joan Dennison; jar tobacco, E. Bain; supper cloth, Mrs. Priest; silk shirt, G. Bain, Box .117; cushion, Mrs. Burston; babies’ outfit, Mrs. McMasters.
