BULLS

SENIOR RUGBY BULLS (.18) v. HALCOMBE (6). The above seniors met at, Bulls on Saturday in beautiful weather, but the attendance was poor. Doug. Cameron was an absentee from the homo team, and the visitors were without the services of Cowdrey, Waldron, Robinson, Duncan and L. Anderson, two of the places being filled by High School boys of whom Te Punga played a fine game. The home forwards placed well, Preston and Harper particularly, and Pawson and Gabites did best of our backs. Halcombo forwards were outplayed, but Te Punga and Clapham gave good displays in their rearguard. The Bulls players wore arm-bands in respect for the late James Smillie, and before commencing both teams and spectators observed a minute .silence. Halcombo kicked off into the sun, and sot up an attack, but ragged pl., nullified their efforts. Gabites started several passing movements for Bulls, only to sec them end in forward passes. Play was in mid-field when Bulls infringed, T. Clapham missing the uprights. The yellows attacked twice, Bulls forcing on each occasion. Gleeson broke away and passed to L. Homes, but the transfer was a hopeless one. Again Gleeson ran through a d kicked, putting Bulls on ttack. Cutis secured and dived over, converting his own try.—Bulls 5, Halcombo 0. Hard play followed, AV. Terry, Te Punga and Clapham making desperate bids, but sound defence kept them out until half-time. On resumption play ’’Tightened, Harper and Lunn attacking, but the last-named lost possession and a force resulted. Yellow forwards swept, back, and D. Hughes secured from the loose and ran round to score under the posts. Terry’s kick missed. —Bulls 5, Holcombe 3. Simpkinson fed the black line of backs, but sound tackling held them up on Halcombo’s goal-line. A serum was formed, and Halcombe forced. Another Bulls rush suffered the same fate. Again Gleeson and Gabites raced through, but the former was pushed out iu the corner, and yellows got out of it with a force. Sanson dribbled through, with Gabites and Harper handy, but Clapham kicked into touch-in-goal. To Punga and Clapham combined well, and play went to the other end, where Terry had an ineffectual shot at goal. Te Punga and Ciapham got going once more, only to see Gabites intercept Clapham’s transfer and make an opening for Preston to break away. Gleeson and Sanson also handled, Sanson scoring in a good position. Cutts failed to goal.—Bulls 8, Halcombo 3. Simpkinson opened up play,, and after Pawson, Gabites and Gleeson had handled, a wild pass to Sanson was snapped up by D. Hughes, who ran 50 yards to score in the corer. Terry failed to improve.—Bulls 8, Halcombe 6. Black forwards then carried all before them. Hesitation by a Halcombe back gave Preston a chance to collect and race over. Gabites goaled.—Bulls 13, Halcombo 6. L. Homes came out .if the ruck with the ball at his toes, but kicked too hard, and a force resulted. Gabites cut through and handed to Preston, who fended off two opponents to ground under the posts. Preston converted. — Bulls 18, Halcombe 6. Preston again broke through, but a force resulted, and time was called. Air. J. Dickson refereed. R.S.A. On Tuesday evening the Bulls branch of the R.S.A. will run a dance in the Town Hall.
