TAIHAPE

CHARITY BALL The Charity Ball to be held iu the Town Hall on Wednesday of this week will be one, of the big social events of the year and a record “house” is expected. The object of the ball is to raise funds to assist the unemployed in Taihape, whose wages are so small that financial assistance is urgently required to make ends meet. The following figures show the earnings per week of the unemployed in Taihape at the present time: Married men, three or more children, £1 10s; married men, one or two children, £1 ss; married men, no children, £1; single men, 7s 6d.’ It is impossible to provide the ordinary necessities of life out of these small amounts, and therefore the Unemployment Committee is very grateful to those who make such efforts as the Charity Ball. The proceeds from this function will be used to provide an extra one or two days’ work for each unemployed man in Taihape during winter stand-down weeks. The Charity Ball is going to be a great turn-out and everybody is requested to make a special effort to attend. The music will be supplied free of charge by the popular Melody Boys while a radio gramophone, kindly provided by Air. H. Bowater, will be used to supply extras. The function, will include novelties that helped to make the big Plunket Ball in Wellington such a success. The supper sittings will be decided on the “ totalisator ” system of voting. The charge for admission to the Charity Ball has been fixed at 2s fid per head. Besides being assured of a really good time, patrons will have the additional satisfaction of knowing that they are assisting a very worthy cause. Whether you dance or not you arc expected to be present. There will be plenty of entertainment for noil-danc-ers as well as dancers. Don’t miss this night of nights. A. AND P. ASSOCIATION The annual meeting of the Rangitikei A. and P. Association was held on Saturday, the president (Air. J. A. Alorrison), presiding over a large and enthusiastic attendance. The chairman presented the annual report, which read as follows; “Although the year has been a difficult one, the results of the activities of the association arc of a very gratifying character. The balance-sheet shows a marked improvement iu the financial position. The year opened with a bank overdraft of £2OO 3s Id, and other liabilities of £2B 3s lOd—total, £228 6s lid. The bank overdraft to-day is £163 8s lid, and outstanding liabilities nil; an improved position of £6l 18s. This compares more than favourably with the previous year’s operations, when the expenditure was £3l 6s 6d in excess of receipts. “The annual show was held on Alarch 2, 1933, and was a marked success. The entries in some classes, particularly dairy cattle, were more numerous than usual, while a slight falling off occurred in some of the other sections. The attendance was up to that of past years. The open-air concert and dance, held in the evening, although lacking the attraction of a fireworks display, was equally well patronised. Fine weather prevailed, enhancing the attractions of the day, and adding to the pleasure of the public. The annual dance, held on June 22, attracted a record attendance and proved highly successful, bota socially and financially. “The amount of outstanding subscriptions is still very large and I would respectfully appeal to members who are in arrears with their payments to make good as early as possible. Loyalty to the association in respect of prompt payments is of valuable assisttancc to the committee. The membership is as follows: Life members, 17; financial members, .175; unfinancial members, 83; total, 275. It is very desirable that the membership roll should be increased, and if there is an early return to improved financial and economic conditions, I see no reason why this should not be accomplished. In conclusion, I invite each member to back up the work of the committee by making whatever individual effort is possible in the interests of the association. ’ ’ The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Election of Officers The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Patron, Air. J. A. Alorrison; president, Air. J. Webb; vice-presidents, Alcssrs. J. B. Collier, J. Quirk, E. R. Fannin, F. R. Cottrell; committee, Alcssrs. B. C. Fitzherbert, 11. Harris, A. Addis, J. Duncan, G. L. Brown, James Smith, H. 11. Steedman, V. Nicholls. A. K. Overton, H. Hintz, R. S. Treadwell, J.
