COMING-OF-AGE PARTY
Upwards of eighty relatives and friends of Air Ivan Trevor Vernon were entertained by the Telegraph Despatch staff, at the Elrick Lounge, on Saturday night on the occasion of his 21st. birthday. The room and lounge were decorated in a novel scheme of orange and scarlet, while the long supper tables were also an attractive part of the picture. Air and Airs G. Vernon, of New Plymouth, and formerly of Wanganui, parents of the guest of the evening, received the guests, who brought many useful presents xor the Occasion. The evening was spent in dancing and games of a novel character, not the least entertaining of these being one in whicn each guest was a recipient of a gift from Mr Vernon himself. The unwrapping of these gifts caused much merriment among the onlookers. Musical chairs and novelty dances, togetner with competitions, whiled away the happy hours. A competition for a large box of chocolates was won by Air A. Graham, amid applause. The head supper table was graced by the large birthday cake, the gift of Mrs J. Barrett. The toast of the guest of the evening was proposed in happy strain by Mr (J. A. Palmer, who referred to the esteem in which Air Vernon is held by his associates on the Post and Telegraph staff. Air C. A. Condie, senior supervisor of the telegraph branvh. also paid tribute to Air Vernon’s excellent qualities as an officer of the department. Air Vernon suitably replied, and Air Howard Vernon returned thanks on behalf of Air and Mrs G. Vernon. The ceremony of cutting the cake was .greeted with loud applause, The singing of “Auld Lang Syne’’ concluded a happy party at the inidight hour.
