A statement that the West Coast district council of the Miners’ Federation had asked the Coal Mine Owners’ As sociation to discuss the present agreement, was made by Mr. W. D. Holgate, president of the association, at the an nual meeting of Taupiri Coal Mines, Ltd. Mr. Holgate referred to the losses to the trade caused by strikes, and mentioned the recent trouble in the Waikato. “I do not think wo are likley to have any further industrial trouble, although trouble is brewing on the West Coast,’’ he said. ‘‘l have received a letter stating that the West Coast miners have asked for a conference in Wellington to consider the ex isting agreement.” Mr. Holgate said it was hard to believe that men in constant employment wished to go on strike for trivial matters at the present time when there was so much unemployment.
