MARTON

MISSIONARY EXHIBITION At the Alissionary Exhibition in St. Stephen’s Parish Hall this afternoon and evening there will be four missionaries present —Miss Woods, now on furlough from China; Aliss Dineen formerly of China; the Rev. G. K. Aloir, formerly of the Melanesian Mission and the Rev. F. C. Long, formerly of India. MAGISTRATE’S COURT Mr. R. AL Watson. S.AI., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate*s. Court at Marton on Wednesday. Breach of Traffic Regulations All-. H. J. Fowler (Traffic Inspector), proceeded against A. G. Candish for speeding in a motor-lorry near Bulls. Defendant pleaded not guilty. The inspector stated that on April 19 defendant was driving a motorlorry towards Bulls and was approaching a sharp declivity on the road, where there was a mob of sheep. Coming over the rise, ne ploughed into the mob of sheep, twenty-one of which were killed. A number of photographs were produced depicting the locality. When defendant would fiist sight the sheep there were four chains in which to pull up the lorry. He interviewed defendant, who stated that he had pulled up a mile back to adjust the tarpaulins on the loau, and when he sighted the sheep he found that the leg of his trousers had been caught in the door and he could not operate the foot-brake, although the hand-brak< was available and he should have been able to pull up within the dis lance. Defendant drove right through the sheep, a number of which were killed and others mutilated. Defendant stated that he tried to apply the brake on the top of the hill, but found his trousers were caught in the door. He aid not use the hand-brake as he was going downhill. He was travelling at about twenty miles an hour. The magistrate considered that the hand-brake was inefficient, otherwise he would have been able to pull up within the distance. Defendant wouiu be convicted and fined 30s and costs 12s. J. A. Wright was charged with driving a motor-lorry across the Rangitikei River Bridge at Bulls, which motor-lorry, together with the load being carried thereon, contravened the requirements of a notice lawfully displayed on the bridge.—The case was adjourned Judgment was given for plaintiff in the following undefended cases: W. 8. Moral v. Robert Allen, claim for rent £lO 12s 9d, costs £3 Is, and an order was made to vacate the dwelling within six weeks; New Zealand Cooperative Distributing Co. v. E. Murtagh, claim £3O 12s sd, costs £4 3s 6d. SAND DUNE PLANTING A permanent camp has been established on “ Santoft. ” Bulls-Turakina Road, for the purpose of starting planting operations on the sand dunes along the Rangitikei coast and a start will be made on Alonday under the control of the Rangitikei County Council. It is understood that twenty men will go into camp. THE CIVIC THEATRE “LET AIE EXPLAIN DEAR” “.Let Ale Explain. Dear.” the excruciatingly funny comedy at the Civic Theatre this evening and tomorrow evening, is Gene Gerrard’s best starring vehicle yet. Directed by him, with the co-operation of Frank Miller, “Let Ale Explain, Dear”shows this popular star at the top of his form. Against lavish backgrounds of superb modern settings, Gerrard, as a misunderstood husband with a flair for falling in and out of domestic strife, has an excellent cast in support. Viola Lyel as the stern unrelenting wife, demonstrates her fine acting talent for this portrayal which is in direct contrast to her recent portrayal of the broken-hearted and jilted typist in “After Office Hours.” Claude Hulbert gives his usual polished imitation of an inane and unhelpful accomplice, and is an admirable foil for Gerrard, while Jane Carr, as the snappy blonde who needs explanation, certainly warrants the description of an important screen discovery. Craven, of the Putorino School, sails on Friday from Auckland per Monterey for Sydney, en route for a holiday in England. RANGITIKEI HUNT Hounds met on Saturday at Crofton cross roads under ideal hunting •conditions. and a good field anticipated fair sport after the recent spell of broken weather. Returning past the 11 Kennels” hounds were thrown into Messrs Purnell and Deighton’s property, and found immediately in the swedes. The hare went away towards “View Halloa,” but scent was holding very badly and soon failed altogether. The huntsman decided to try for a fresh hare, and drew several paddocks blank, till hounds found near the railway and went away through “ Ovingdean” towards Greatford, and doubled back to the Tutaenui, after a fair run over some very big fences that produced several spills but no one was hurt. Hounds were whipped off in the bush at Air Willis’ homestead and taken back to Messrs Purnell and Deighton’s. Finding again in the swedes, hounds got a good break on the field, and •crossing this farm, and Mr Stantiall’s, over the railway, hunted on until sheep stained the line at tho Greatfold Road. Although tho hunting was hardly up to expectations, there were several sparkling incidents caused, no doubt owing to tho big fences encountered. Two well-known thrusters charged a rasper together and camo to grief—well over tho obstacle—in a tumbled heap of men and steeds. Quickly disentangling themselves from the whirling mass of steel-shod hooves, they remounted and continued the •chase none the worse for the experience. Later in the day Mr Roger Simpson performed no mean feat in clearing at one bound a large hedge and an unseen top-dresser in the field beyond. His good little mare changed feet cleverly in mid-air and landing between the shafts safely avoided a nasty fall The Master and Mrs Gaisford entertained the held at a verv enjoyable afternoon tea at *‘ View Halloa.” Among those out were the Master, Mr Riddiford, who was unable to ride owing to an injury to his ankle; Dep-uty-master F. McLean, on Annk; Huntsman Goodwin on Bonnie; Hon. Whips B. Simpson, To Puke; P. Brian*, Glenleven; and J. G. Wilson on Ted; ie Misses Gaisford, Target; C. Wilson,
