DISORDERS IN SPAIN ARRESTS PREVENT COUP (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Received May 10, 9.50 p.m. MADRID, May 10. A general strike beginning at midnight and aiming at the overthrow of the Government, in conjunction with a rising headed by army chiefs, resulted in serious disorders throughout the country. During a collision between police and Reds at. Madrid, a woman produced a bomb from a basket and hurled it at the combatants, killing a policeman and a Red and wounding five, including herself. A bomb exploded in a tramway depot and injured five. Six wore killed and many wounded in fighting in the provinces. The strike failed in Barcelona and was only partly successful in Madrid. The Go vernment's promptitude in arresting hundreds of suspects, including twelve staff officers, last night prevented the staging of a coup d’etat. Twenty bomb explosions occurred in the course of the day. Electric cables 1 and water mains were damaged. Many rioters were arrested.
