MAYOR TAKES OFFICE

INSTALLATION CEREMONY COUNCIL MEETS ON TUESDAY. Mr. N. G. Armstrong, Mayor of Wanganui, who was returned to that office at the recent elections by a substantial majority, w’as installed into office yesterday morning, in accordance with the usual custom. The ceremony took place in the City Council Chambers, there being present Messrs. F. J. Hill, A. E. Halligan, J. Robertson, E. O’Meara, J. Siddells, W. M. Falconer, G. H. Trott, G. Murch, C. R. White and L. Chisholm. Apologies were received from Messrs. J. Crowley, J. J. Scott, H. G. Horsley, G. I. Jones and L. Pleasants. Mr. Hill was elected to the chair, and after Mr. Murch had announced the result of the elections, installed the Mayor and called upon him to make his declaration. This Mr. Armstrong did, and then took the chair. Each member of the council also signed the declaration forms. Mr. Armstrong congratulated the old members of the council on being returned and welcomed the new members. As the majority of the council had been returned he took it that the same policy as was followed during the past two years would again be carried out for the coming term. Everything seemed to be fairly clear and straight forward. The new council would be called on Tuesday when sub-eommit-tees would be appointed and estimates drawn up. As the 10 per cent, penalty was being added to the rates that day they would know were the council stood in that regard but it did not appear that the new rates would be struck for some time as many objections to valuations had been handed in so that the Valuation Court would have to sit again to make fresh enquiries. “I have no doubt,”' said Mr. Armstrong, “that the new council will get on as well together as the last did during the past two years. I look for the same pleasant co-operation and hope that good work will be done for the advancement of Wanganui.”
