PATEA

LADIES’“GOLF CLUB. Patea ladies will play a match to-day with the Waverley ladies. The Patea team is as follows:—Miss Hurley, Aliss Glcnny, Aliss Hemingway, Aliss Harris, Miss Bourke, Aliss N. Hurley, Airs. Glenny, Afiss Crawford, Mrs. Crompton, Mrs. Wither, Airs. Af. Crawford, Afiss Carey, Mrs. Haddow, Afiss Kiihfuss, Miss Wybourne, Afiss C. Davidson and Afiss Peterson, ELECTION DAY. Deeper interest was taken in the Afunicipal elections in Patea this year than in former years, more votes being recorded on Wednesday than at the last election held here. In spite of teeming rain voters kept the returning officer, Mr L. Austin, busy all day. Results were announced shortly after half past eight o’clock to a crowd of some hundred or more, which had collected. They sheltered in cars in front of the Town Hall until the rain ceased shortly before the announcement was made. Brief expressions of thanks were made by respective candidates. HEAVY - RAINS. The Patea River, in common with others along the coast, was flooded on Thursday and yesterday. Flooded areas have been reported at several places along the banks near Pariroa and above the Alain Bridge at Patea. Silt has also discoloured the freshet in the river to a considerable extent, while a large amount of driftwood, and many large trees have also been brought down. Afost of these were carried over the bar, but for a while yesterday they accumulated against the piles of the one traffic bridge. Cattle and sheep have also been carried away, while a complete wooden bridge was swept down. It rested for a while on the flats below the wharves, but later was carried out to sea. It was stated to be the Maben Road bridge, about which there has been a great deal of discussion at different times at the County Council table. Tho county engineer, Mr. L. F. Row, however, states that none of the country bridges have been damaged. He reports that many slips have occurred on both sideroads and secondary highways, while one or two minor ones have come down on the main road at Manawapou, Whenuakura and Alanutahi.

Continued rain in tho town itself has also been experienced, and the gutters and floodways were taxed heavily, and all meetings for Wednesday and Thursday nights were poorly attended. On this count, also, the Guido birthday party that was to have been held at Alton on Tursday was postponed.
