JUVENILE UNEMPLOYMENT

A WANGANUI COMMITTEE A further step in the formation of a Wanganui committee to take an interest in the welfare of unemployed juveniles was taken last night. A meeting was held in the Technical College library, under the auspices of an executive representing the Rotary Club, the Y.M.C.A., Teachers’ Association and the Chamber of Commerce. The gathering was a very representative one, those present being: Mesdamos Hirst, Hair, Morris, the Misses Tizard, Graham, McNivcn, Messrs W. A. Tizard, W. B. Smith, A. Crawford, E. G. Coddington, D. T. Maxwell, G. Murch, W. Hallam, J. Manlev, J. T. Werry, H. G. Horsley, H. H. Enderby, J. H. Miller, F. G. Beaven, E. R. Hodge, J. J. Adams, I. E. Newton. Dr. G. H. Robertson, Archdeacon Young, Rev. R. Dudley.

Apologies for absence, expressing a desire to co-operate were received from Messrs J. Moye, H. M. Keesing, J. H. Williams, R. L. Thompson, N. Fulton and D. McFarlane. Mr W. Bruce was elected chairman. He invited an expression of opinion from each one present. After full discussion it was resolved that those present should form a Juvenile Employment Committee for Wanganui. Mr J. Manley was appointed secretary, with Messrs A. C. Crawford and W. BassettSmith as assistant secretaries.

The election of a permanent chairman was held over, pending a recommendation from a sub committee, consisting of Messrs W. A. Izard, F. G. Beaven, Archdeacon Young and Dr. G. H. Robertson, which would also nominate members from the Juvenile Employment Committee to act on special comittees to investigate the lines to be taken by the movement. The ladies present formed a ladies’ committee to ascertain what was already being done regarding the registration of unemployed girls. A registration committee, consisting of Dr. G. H. Robertson, Messrs A. C. Crawford, J. J. Adams and W. BassettSmith, was appointed to assist the secretary in compiling a register of unemployed boys. The next meeting of the full committee will be held on Thursday, August 11.
