N.S.W. ELECTIONS

THE GOULBURN SEAT HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF Received June 15, 11.50 p.m. SYDNEY, June 15. The only noteworthy incident in the New South Wales elections is the announcement of the final figures in the Goulburn seat, where Mr Tully, former Minister of Lands in the Lang Government, has been defeated by Mr W. Loughlin by 1000 votes —a case of history repeating itself. Mr Loughlin was Minister of Lands in 1925, in the first Lang Government, which was wrecked by party defections, among whom was Mr Loughlin, who is now returned a United Australia Party representative. Labour Leader’s Career Mr. Forgan Smith, Queensland’s new Premier, was born in Scotland 44 years ago, and received his education at Dunoon Grammar School. Shortly after completing his apprenticeship as a painter he went to Queensland, settling in the town of Mackay, where he commenced business on his own account. It was not long before his new fellow-townsmen perceived his ability, and he was persuaded to stand for Parliament in the Labour interest. He was returned to represent Mackay at the age of 27, and has held the seat ever since. He has held positions in the Theodore, Gillies, and McCormack administrations, and on the retirement of Mr. McCormack, became loader of the Labour Party. While Minister of Agriculture, about five years ago, Mr. Forgan Smith paid on official visit to New Zealand to make inquiries into farming methods. When first appointed to the portfolio of Agriculture he went off into the backblocks with bullock wagons to obtain first-hand knowledge of his duties. He possesses a ready wit, is a fluent platform speaker, and is endowed with the qualities which make for leadership.
