TRAIN WRECKERS

ATTEMPTS IN N.S.W.. MAIL TRAIN’S ESCAPE. SYDNEY, June 15. Two deliberate attempts were made to wreck a train at a lonely spot near Wingham. Crowded with passengers the North Coast Mail struck several sleepers placed across the lines. Soon afterwards patrol linesmen found four sleepers replaced on the line to derail a local passenger train. The police and railway detectives are concerned about the number of attempts to derail trains in the Metropolitan area during last month. The North Coast Mail was travelling fast when the engine struck the sleepers and carried them several hundred yards before the train could be stopped. A serious accident could easily have happened. The locality is rugged with deep cuttings. A message on June 4 reported three instances of attempts to wreck trains which had failed owing to the vigilance of the drivers. In one case, however, some trucks had left the lines but no one was injured.
