EMPIRE CANCER CAMPAIGN

GRAND COUNCIL MEETING GRANTS FOR RESEARCH. LONDON, April 15. Sir John Bland-Sutton, Aft., presided at the quartejly meeting of tho Grand Council of the British Empire Cancer Campaign on April 11. The following grants, totalling £lO,000, were made in furtherance of cancer research: £5OO to St. Mark’s Hospital, £2500 to St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, p l5OO to the Cancer Hospital, and £5500 to the Middlesex Hospital. Tho report of the judges concerning thn adjudication of the 1931 Garton nrize essays on the subject of “The Early Diagnosis of Cancer” was received. In tho opinion of the judges, none of the essays that dealt with the set subject was worthy of the prize, and the grand council accordingly resolved that the prize for 1931 be not awarded. Dissertations for the next Garton prize on research work on “The Biological Effects and Mode of Action of Radiations upon Malignant and other Colls” are due to bo received not later than December 31. 1933, and a large number of applications for copies of tho rules and regulations have boon received.

Tho grand council approved the scheme for co-operation with tho nursing services relative to a large scale circulation of tho campaign’s official publication—“ Tho Truth About Cancer.” Arrangements have been made in collaboration with tho committees of tho Queen’s Institute of District Nursing and the Public Health Section of tho Col’ege of Nursing, whereby copies of the book will be made available for the active members of those organisations. It is anticipated that the individual members of tho association will make returns in a year’s time in order that it may bo ascertained how far this propaganda scheme for early notification of unusual symptoms has proved to be effectual in its application.
