AUSTRIA AND GOLD
ANGLO FRENCH CONTEST LONDON. May 12. A struggle between Britain and France to determine whether Austria shall maintain the gold standard if going on in Austria, states the Vienna correspondent of the Alanchcstor Guar dian. Drastic action must follow the resignation of tho Government, for there i> a Budget deficit of £2.000,000, and 27.500,000 more is required to meet service charges and pay tho foreign nnligntions of the State municipal banks. The League of Nations can give no' more help, and according to Reichs nost, the Government newspaper, ’.’rance is willing to grant a loan to maintain tho gold standard, if Aus rria inflates by 10 per cent, and stah ilisos tho currency on the lower gold basis. England is reported to be countering ’ho French move by offering to reduce Austria’s foreign indebtedness provided that Austria abandons the gold standard.
