RECORD SPEED WITH MAIL
LARGE AMOUNT BY NIAGARA. QUICK SORTING OF LETTERS. AUCKLAND, May 17. The handling of JfluO bags of English and American mail from the Royal Mail liner Niagara, which reached Auckland from Vancouver vestc lav afternoon, was carried out in record time by the postal officials. The Niagara anchored in the stream at half-past four o’clock, and immediately bags of letters were loaded into the postal launch. A few minutes later the launch raced to the end of Queen’s Wharf with 232 bags of Southern mail and 58 bags for Auckland, which loaded into lorries and rushed to the post office, where tho first bags wero delivered 20 minutes after the Niagara had dropped anchor By special arrangement with the Railway Department the Southern portion of the letter mail was loaded into the guard’s van of rhe limited express which left for Wellington at seven o’clock last evening. The remainder of the Niagara’s mail was discharged when the vessel berthed at Prince’s Wharf shortly after five o’clock. All the Auckland portion, 472 bags, was sorted at the post, office last evening and tho secondclass matter for the South was loaded into postal vans for despatch by goods train.
