MAJESTIC. “The Big House,” coming to the Majestic Theatre at Taihape to-day, at the matinee and again at night, is a thrilling convict story based on the episode which took place in America recently, when the convicts at a prison tried to escape. Afachine-guns arc brought into action and modern warfare is introduced into the prison. Wallace Beery takes a leading part and is ably supported by a first-class cast. FARMERS’ UNION. The annual meeting of the Taihape branch of the New Zealand Fanners Union was held on Wednesday, Air D. Scott, chairman of the branch, presiding over a satisfactory attendance. Air F. A. Nelson (organiser) was in attendance. The balance-sheet, which disclosed a small credit balance was read and adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—Chairman, Mr D. Scott (reelected); vice-chairman, Mr A. R. Fannin; executive committee, Alessrs H. Belk, R. J. Gibbs, W. R. Anderson, G. E. Anderson, R. Treadwell, J. A. Morrison, Thompson (Taoroa), J. Webb, D. G. Gordon, F. Beuck, A. W. Bicknell, Geo. Brown and L. A. Hebberd; secretary, Air F. Al. Marlow (re-elected); delegates to Wellington provincial executive, Messrs G. E. Anderson, W. R. Anderson and A. W. Bicknell. A meeting of the executive followed the annual meeting. Air F. A. Wilson delivered an interesting address on the work the Farmers’ Union had performed in the past and outlined its plans for the future. At the conclusion of his address, Air Nelson was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. GENERAL NEWS. Rev. H. Harris, Vicar of St. Margaret’s Parish, will preach at St. Peter’s Church, Gonville, Wanganui, to morrow evening. Recently the Taihape Fire Brigade applied to the United Fire Brigades' Association for a gold star for Superintendent J. Mortland, who has completed 25 years of fire brigade service. The decoration has come to hand and will he presented to Air Mortland by the Mayor of Taihape (Mr L. B. 11. de Lautour). It is understood that the presentation will be made early next month. Air Mortland has been a member of the Taihape Fire Brigade for 21A years. He was a member of the Kaiapoi Brigade for 31 years before coming to Taihape. Air Mortland has played a prominent part in the progress of the local Fire Brigade, in ad di tion to taking a keen interest in fire brigade work generally. He has attend ed many conferences and demonstra tions, and the high honour which will he conferred upon him shortly is one to which he is richly entitled. (Continued ou Page 12).
