LAID TO REST

THE LATE T. B. WILLIAMS In the presence of a large gathering, representative of all shades of public thought, the late Mr T. B. Williams was laid to rest in the Wanganui Old Cemetery yesterday. The Rev. Clifford Dobbs, of Christ Church, conducted a service at the residence and officiated at the graveside. Tn addition, officers and members of the Lodge Tongariro performed the impressive funeral service jf the Masonic Craft, being led by Worshipful Master Nicholson and Bros. E. 1. Cox, D. MeJdrum, H. R. Jones and T. R. Clancey. “We are met here to-day as the I'huich of God, as Lodges, as citizens to lay to rest one who has faithfully served Wanganui,” said the Rev. Dobbs. The occasion should not. be allowed to pass, he continued, without something being said for the man who had laboured for the people. G We will not praise him,” said the speaker. “He would not have had it so. He was too humble. We remember, with grateful hearts, what ho has done. There ar° many here who worked with him, knew him as a friend, as a councillor, as a Mayor. These men will know that ther? was no more loved man in Wanganui than T. B. Williams.” The speaker recalled Air Williams’ work in war time, when he maintained Wanganui’s name for patriotism. “To have lived in Wanganui was to have known Mr Williams,” Rev. Dobbs proceeded. “And to have known him was to have loved him. He was a man of single heart, a man of intergritv who placed his city before all things.” The pall bearers comprised five who were members of the Council during the late Mr Williams’ term of office—Messrs W. L. Young, G. Spriggens. J. Siddells. N. G. Armstrong and J. C. Richardson —with Mr E. Durie, who was associated with Mr Williams in business for many years.

Among those present were the Hon. W. A. Veitch, the Mayor (Mr N. G. Armstrong). Mr Fred Snisted, one of Mr Williams’ boyhood friends, and Mr Ewan Campbell. Besides a large at ♦ondaneo of member?, of the Masonic and Foresters’ Lodges there were representatives present from every local bodv in the city.
