Public Opinion

! “MONEY” Sir, —Alay 1 say a lew words in reply to your contributor, “State , Bank,” whose letter appears in this morning’s issue of the “Chronicle.” ’ The meaning of my brief address seems to have completely escaped my unknown friend, whose psoudonymity I shall not attempt to penetrate. He convincingly omits to quo’c the cogent reasons why cheques are not money—their lack of general acceptability and the legal liability attaching to the endorser. From a purely stilish view point, 1 might welcome a legislative eu-irtment which would make my cheque? legal tender. But I admit frankly that legislation of this nature wo nil be a disservice to the community. And the subject of my address happened to be: “Alonetary Community Service.” 1 am old-fashioned enough to accept facts, and to believe that history and philosophy have lessons for us which our democratic communities are apt to overlook or disregard If your correspondent will de me the honour of carefully perusing the published report of my address, he will doubtless, in time, arrive at its intention. I wonder if his num- le plume may be taken as indicating a leaning towards that intensive nationalism, from which the whole world suffers/ Does he realise how frequently ihe dcsirj for “State banking” is merely tho progeny of envy, sired by greed?—Yours faithfully, OLAF HOLST, Wanganui, June 15. 1931.
