WELCOME WEEK”
PRIME MINISTER’S MESSAGE The following message has been received by the secretary of Ihe Wanganui “Welcome Week” committee from the Prime Minister, Mr G. W. Forbes:—• “Prices in the markets of the world have tumbled and all countries have been shaken by the crash. As a large exporter of primary products New Zealand could not avoid a fair share of the trouble and difficulty that ensued. We in this Dominion cannot control prices in the overseas markets where we sell our produce; that is certain, so we have no alternative but to adjust our affairs to the n6w level. The task of readjustment is not a pleasant one, but tho resolute manner and promptness with which the people of the Dominion have risen to the occasion augurs well for an early return to general prosperity. The country is at present taking tho medicine, and is shortly duo to come up smiling again. The task of readjustment will be hastened, and its most distressing and serious concomitant, unemployment, will be lessened by adopting as a slogan ‘Business as usual during reorganisation. ’ “For these reasons 1 heartily commend the committee, who have organised the ‘ Wanganui Welcome Week,’ and I am pleased to be associated with the effort being made in the progressive city of Wanganui to promote a more cheerful atmosphere and liven up business. I feel sure that the people of Wanganui and surrounding district will accept the lead given by fheii enterprising committee and will make tho ‘Wanganui Welcome Week’ a pronounced success. geo. w. Forbes.”
