WINTER SHIELD MATCH WANGANUI RETAIN TROPHY FEILDING HELD TO DRAW. I Two all was the score at the conclusion of the Winter Shield representative hockey match between Feilding and Wanganui on Gonville Park on Satur day afternoon. With greater expert once in their favour, the members of tho Wanganui team combined in the first half for clockwork movements that were only combated by the youthful determination of the Ecilding sid<\ Th< visitors equalised tho score in the second half. They maintained their dash and vigour to the end, trying persistent ly to open up the close, tight play of the Wanganui halves and forwards. The teams were: Feilding.—Lofts, C. Le Brun gave the ball to Hughes, on the wing, who worried his way into tho circle, but Feilding cleared and shortly afterwards were at the Wanganui goal, A. Packer taking a shot from a penalty corner. Wanganui kept the attack out and then G. Adams sent the ball well down the field with .t long shot. R. Hughes, Mclntyre and Latham worked in a rush, but lost possession, and the Feilding men soon had the ball back at the Wanganui goal. A. Packer scooped it across the circle to McLeod, who brought it back. He had a shot, but the ball went wide. At this stage T. Packer was doing great work for Feilding, the Wanganui men finding him a distinct sung in attacking movements. Bannin gave the ball to Mclntyre in a good position and Mclntyre sent in a shot that missed but landed about 2D yards behind the line. Connell then staged a solo run that came to an end when he met Fleet. The Feilding player shortly afterwards figured in the Wanganui circle but was not attended with success. Wanganui then came down the field with a rush that saw the ball pass through Tizard to Latham, who returned and came round on the inside '-o take the pass, Latham sent the ball on to Mclntyre, who stopped for Conner. to take a shot which was met. Tizard was following the ball and pushed it in goal in the scramble. Half time followed, with the scores: Wanganui 2; eFilding 0. Feilding opened the second spell wii.h a rush that took them to the Wanganui circle, but the ball went to the other end by way of Le Brun, R. Hughes and Connell. T. Packer gained possession and sent on to Fleet, who gained a lot of ground before he was stopped. Tizard broke away with one of his characteristic tricky runs and centred for R. Hughes to come in. Wanganui came down the field with several sporadic moves, the younger Feilding men tackling enthusiastically. Mclntyre had a shot but the Feilding defence was sure. Tizard took the rebound and attempted to goal but Feilding again rose to the occasion. At this stage Wanganui had not the same combination as that which marked ihe earlier portions of the game. Feilding ran away with the bull but the Wang: uui goalie came right oj.it and cleared with a hard hit. Feilding returned and Elect had the ball but offside disallowed his goal. A. Youth, was having its way, and Feilding took control again, Fleet passing Hickman to transfer to Packer, but. the shot went behind. Both sides were hitting hard and the ball wAs travelling about the field a good deal without much advantage to either side. Mclntyro was shining for the Wanganui side and he led a rush into the Feilding circle, but the visitors cleared from the resulting scramble. Defence was turned into attack and Feilding swept down tho field to meet Le Brun, who cleared in the circle. The younger men returned again and the Wanganui goalie made a fine save. A. Packer secured and tried at the goal, but. the goalie brought off another and even better save. Wanganui then closed up the game and kept the ball in the middle of <he field. They were in Feilding territorv, but the Feilding men were fighting hard and in one or two breaks from their own half found Le Brun a nuisance to their efforts with his hard return hitting. With half a minute to go Feilding broke away and the bull was given to Fleet, who continued on down tho field and had an excited shot from the left. The ball travelled across the goal mouth, leaving the final score: Wanganui 2, Feilding 2. | Messrs Wallace and R. L. Thompson j ably controlled the game. REPRESENTATIVE MATCH FEILDING LA IM UH WIN The senior ladies’ match was very oven and provided some tense moments. There was no score at half-time, and R. McKelvio registered tho only goal in the match for Feilding. Messrs Parton and Sporle were the referees.
