WANGANUI CLUB'S TEST OVER BRAMWELL COURSE - I: XU EL LENT TIMES RET UK NED I With conditions underfoot not of the best the Wanganui Harrier Club held the lirst official test of the 1931 season over tho Bramwell Course on Saturday afternoon. But in spite of the difii cult conditions the times returned bv the. leading runners were considered to bo excellent. Particular interest was i.••ken in the les‘. in view of the coming eciitcst with tne Masterton Harrier Club in the annual compention for the Henson Trophy, wl ick is to be held on ‘riiturdav weef. K. Johnston Ujl U. Welter staged a great race all the way through, the former winning by a marginof some 20(1 yards. Weller met with misfortune early in the race, losing a shoe at one of tho fences. Unfortunately the shoe was damaged and he lost it twice again during the run. Nevertheless he hung on determinedly to Johnston, thereby establishing hinisell Without any doubt as a tenacious battler. A good performance was put up by G. Johnston, who ran into third position after a steady run, while one of tho surprises of the day was S. Minnelk who took fourth position, ind won the sealed handicap. Under the stiff’ conditions, and over one of tho hardest of courses, it may be considered that the run was alto gother satisfactory. About the Race Thirty-live harriers lined up on the racecourse, and were sent away to a good start by the president, Mr C. R. White. The field made a spirited dash for the gate and a hot pace was maintained over the first mile by tho whole pack. At Ridge's Corner the field was still well bunched, with Jo b '.ston a few yards ahead of Weller, who was closely followed by G. Johnston and F. Hoskins. Some ten yards behind them Bourgeois, 11. E. B. Newton and S. Minncll were running easily, followed by O. Hoskins, Carde, Northovor, Law. Piercy, L., Bilder, H. Cook, O. Bilder beck, and K. Bilderbcck. Over the next mile tho leaders, keep ing together, began to draw away from tho remainder of the field. At Peakes Road Weller, who was still four or five yards behind Johnston, had his shoe torn off when climbing tho fence and lost about one hundred yards. K. Johnston and F. Hoskins then led the wavup tho hill with the field in much the same order. Some good jumping was seen at the fences at this point, the runners taking them in their stride. At the top of tho Tayforta hill, with the worst of the rough country behind them, tho runners wore well strung out. Weller hud regained the greuad he had lost and was only ten yards behind Johnston. They reached tho fence together but Johnston had the advantage and maintained his lead, which from that point he began to increase gradually. G. Johnston, following the leaders, was now some 50 yards behind running with an easy action, while Minncll followed him at a similar interval. A. Hoskins, Bourgeois and Cardo were further back, with the rest of tho runners well strung out. F. Hoskins when iu a good position, had to pull out. At the Tayforth Church Weller was 15 yards behind Johnston, with only one morn hill to climb. G. Johnston had dropped back and was now some 250 yards behind, with S. Minncll well back. Bourgeois, Hoskins and Carde held the same positions, with Newton coming up fast behind them and Northover and A. Mackay on his heels. With the exception that Newton passed Hoskins and Carde tho position of the loaders was not altered over the final stages. Tho following were the positionsand
