WINNERS OF THE SHIELD FINAL MATCH FOE TROPHY j K.P. DRAW WITH EASTBROOKE By “Abbotsford.'' Despite wretched weather conditions the deciding game in the Wanganui Shield competition on Saturday provided some exciting football with t lie players making a valiant attempt I" overcome the adverse ground conditions. The first spell ended with K.P.’s holding a lead of two goals, to which, on play, they were thoroughly entitled. If K.P.’s were the better team jn the lirst spell there was no doubt about Brooke’s supremacy in the second Two goals came their way and th< final whistle found the scores level, three all. Ac a result of this game K.P.’s are now undisputed holders of the Shield for another year. The Game Described. The teams were as follows: K.P.’s. —Robb, Neilson, Proudfoot, Davidson, Jamieson, Christie, Rusling, Hope, Ritchie, Meikle and Gilroy. Eastbrooke—Scott, Clapham, Brewer, Spence, Wood, Maxy, Upton, Garner, Killeen, Jones and Clapham. K.P.’s were the first to get going, forcing a fruitless corner in the opening minute. Play was transferred to midfield when a sudden break by ’Biooke gave Killeen an opening which was accepted and the blues were one up. A goal down put K.P.’s on their mettle and the ’Brooke was fully extended. A miss by Brewer gave a corner which was cleared and then a cross from Hope to Ritchie saw the latter miss when well placed. Wood eventually raised the siege and transferred to Clapham. The latter made ground and sent goalwards to Proudfoot to effect a good clearance. A cross from Hope found no takers with the goal unprotected, and play veered to midfield. Garner led out nicely and gave to Upton. The winger forced a corner and Wood eventually sent over.

Proudfoot was again prominent m defensive work and then Ritchie sent. Rusling away. The winger beat Brewer and centred nicely ,o leave Ritchie with an easy score. K.P.’s nearly increased their score a minute later when Spence, in attempting clear, nearly sent through his own goal. A quick transfer saw Robb in difficulties and the goalie was lucky in clearing his lines. Jamieson was nexu prominent in forcing the pace, sending a lobbing ball towards goal. Clapham missed and Ritchie, coming up fast, sent the ball into the net. K.P.’s at this stage were well on top, Ritchie causing the blue defence a lot ot trouble. Meikle had a try which Scott saved and then Gilroy crossed for Rusling to send past. Clapham made ground on the ’Brooke left i and crossed for Proudfoot to head clear and then Robb had to save from Jon Os. Good combined play by Garner and Upton put ’Brooke in good position, Killeen missing narrowly from the latter’s cross. K.P.’s soon relieved the pressure and got round Scott per medium of the left wing. A couple of corners failed to materialise but the pressure was bound to tel land Meikle ultimately got one in to put the reds two up. This lead they inaitained until halft-ime, the scores being: K.P.’s 3, ’Brooke 1. In the Second Spell. Eastbrooke attacked immediately on the resumption only to be sent back by Proudfoot. At the other end Hope just cleared the bar with a good shot and the reds’ next move was pulled up by offside. Then followed a period of pressure from the blues, the K.P. de fence being fully extended. A lack < f penetrative power kept ’Brooke from scoring but eventually Jones got one past Robb. Immediately following this score Jones again tested Robb without result and then Upton crossed a good ball which Neilson cleared. A free kick in good position looked good but Upton shot weakly, Meikle clearing. A corner to ’Brooke followed without result and then a sudden break by Hope nearly brought a score, the shot just going over. Two corners to K.P.’s kept play round Scott until Wood opened up play which. Killeen and Upton carried on only to be repulsed. Ritchie broke clean, away for K.P.’s but shot straight, at Scott. Tho pressure was maintained for a spell, Rusling just missing and then a cross from Gilroy brought a fruitless corner. Wood and Maxey were responsible for some good work, the former sending Garner away. A transfer to Killeen saw the latter robbed by Neilson, but the respite was only temporary. A nice opening was made for Jones to shoot over the bar. then came a penalty for hands, Maxey making the scores level with the kick. With the scores level ’Brooke went all out for the winning goal, V. (’lapham having a good try which Robb saved. A minute later Proudfoot was just in time to clear when the blues looked like scoring. A free to K.P.’s brought relief but only for a moment and a sharp run by Jones and Clapham forced Robb to hancile. With time drawing near Proudfoot exploited tho touch-line in an endeavour to keep his goal intact and the game, which had been full of interest, quietly fizzled out. K.P.’s 3; Eastbrooke 3.
