MAYORAL ELECTION At tho close of tho poll on Wednesday tho returning officer, Air J. H. Lucas, announced that there were 46 voces by declaration. Those had been allowed, and tho final declaration was: Walter Harris - 341 Henry W. WAIMARINO COUNTY BRIDGES AND APPROACHES A new bridge is required op Harris’ Hill, Manganui riding, to replace the existing one, which is in a very unsound condition, seated the Waimarino County engineer, Air H. L. Hogg, in his monthly report to tho council on Saturday. It may be possible to substitute concrete pipes for a bridge. The formation requires attention before tho wet weather set in. Tho erection of the Otautu bridge. Makiuo Road, Ractihi, will probably be started this week. When this work is being done it --.ay be necessary to close tho road for a day or more to facilitate working. The engineer is endeavouring to arrange for suitable men to drive a tunnel near Scott’s bridge in the Huikumu riding, which work, when completed, will allow of the filling being done to replace ho existing bridge. The preparations of plans for a new bridge over tho Alangachuchu stream, Karioi, will be put in hand as soon as possible, as the existing bridge is extremely weak and totally unsafe for heavy loads. The survey of the site will be complete at an early date. The metalling contract on Field’s Track, Karioi, is now completed, and is continuous to the Kaiwai bridge. There is a short section of metalling to be done to the Ohotu road junction, when the bridge is erected an dthe approaches completed. Ono of the settlers on this road lent his horse team to assist in the work of improving some of the weak sections, and need less to add the County Council appreciated very much this action of the ratepayers. SLIPS IN WAIMARINO lu his report to the Waimarino County Council on Saturday, the engineer, Mr H. L. Hogg, stated that the recent heavy rains brought down numerous slips on the county section of the Pi-piriki-Jerusalem road. About four miles of this road have been completed and about 3J miles metalled. Before this section is handed over to the County Council to be controlled by it tho Public Works Department wil have to clear away these slips. An under-slip has occurred on the Huikumu road, where it will bo necessory to either widen tho road or set a crib-log. Several slips occurred on the Owairain and these are being cleared as oprua road as a result of recent heavy portunity offers. On the Ol”ra road, in the Ruatiti riding, recent heavy roins caused a deep wash-out near the end of the metal. A line of 24-inch concrete pipes has been set and the filling re-instated. Additional pipes will bo required later to provide more road width. The engineer stated that the county workmen had been negaged for some time on slip clearing and general maintenance work. ACCIDENT A young man named John Robinson, who lives in Ractihi, met with a painful accident at the Wairiri sawmill on tho Paraparu road. He was working with one of the saws s\hen his finger came in contact with it and his index finger was badly lacerated. He was taken at once to Dr. Feltham’s surgery, where it was found necessary to amputate part of tho finger. RETURNING OF CAR A claim made by Mrs AL Watson, of Wanganui, against the Raecih’i Auto Company for the return of a car or its value, £B<J, and £4O damages, was decided at tho Raetihi Magistrate’s Court by Air J. G. Hewitt, S.M. The case had been partly heard and was adjourned from a pervious sitting to allow of the evidence of tho plaintiff to bo taken at Wanganui or to have her in attendance in Raetihi. The evidence was taken and submitted to the Magistrate. The car in question was at one time the property of the plaintiff’s brother. It was seized by the defendant in settlement of a claim, and sold by auction by the plaintiff. It was alleged that the car was not the property of the brother, but belonged to plintiff. The Magistrate non-suited the plaintiff and gave judgment for defendant for £9, solicitor’s costs. SEQUEL TO COLLISION CLAIM FOR DAMAGES On the evening of December 7, 1930, two motor cars met in a col e ion on the Parapara road about four miles from Raetihi. One was a Ford sedan car making the i Ip from the Chateau ' Tongariro to Wanganui, and was owned and driven by Aliss Bessie Gage, school teacher, of Wanganui. The other was driven by Harold Herbert, blacksmith. of Raetihi. The damage to Aliss Gage’s car cost £3B 14s 1 3d, and Air Herbert had to pay £7 18s to have his repaired. No agreement was arrived ac between tho parties and on Wednesdoy, at the Ractihi Alagistrate’s Court, Mr J. G. Hewitt was called upon*! to hear a claim made by Aliss Gage against Herbert, while he counter-claimed for tho damage to his car. Air Izard, of Wanganui, appeared for the lady and Mr L. F. Baird for Herbert. After other evidence had been heard the Alagistrate said that it appeared to him that possibly Herbert could have gone a foot further to tho edge and allowed the other car to pass. It. was a dangerous corner and the other car should have been ready to stop at any time after it was seen that Herbert was coming up the hill. He would non-suit plaintiff in each case, and each side could make good their own damage.
