MUNICIPAL BAND. | The annual meeting of the Patea Alunieipal Brass Band was held last Friday night, the Mayor (Air F. Rosbottom) presiding over an excellent attendance of members. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted, the former showing a very creditable and successful year. The balance sheet showed a small credit balance. The election of officers resulted ns follows: — President., Air F. Ramsbottoin; ’. ice-presidents, last • year’s reelected. with the addition of Messrs T. •Scott, (It. Honey field, G. Pettigrew with F. Locker (twenty-one in all); honorary secretary and treasurer, Air P C. I in lay son; Conductor: Air S. E. Moore; committee: Alessrs K. Christenson (bandmaster), R. Willis (corporal A. Carey (lance-corporal), P. C. Finlayson (sergeant), and president, secretary and conductor ex officio. Several matters in connection with the rules of the band were discussed and settle l !. Votes cf thanks were ac corded the Borough Council for assistance in many ways; employers, for leniency in the matter of time-off for employees to attend contests; and all others who had assisted to make tho year a success. The meeting was fed lowed with supper and a smoko, when songs, toasts, and community-singing passed tho time very pleasantly. RUGBY FOOTBALL. The opening matches of the South Taranaki Rugby competitions were played last Saturday. In spite of the cold, large crowds of spectators attended most grounds where senior matches most grounds where senior matches were played, while junior flames also came in for a fair share of support. Enthusiasm appears to be on the increase this season, Taranaki, besides being reputed to bo one of the most enthusiastic of the provinces as regards football. Patea seniors travelled to Hawera where they were unsuccessful in gaining a victory. The game was equal in all things except that. Hawera had attained and used the art of playing well against the wind. Onlookers were treated to a thoroughly good clean game, with points in favour of both sides. Patea was unlucky ana was beaten by points only, the scores being 11—0. The juniors played Okaiawa at the local Domain and were victorious, winning by 14—6. The game was clean and willing, there being very little to choose between the two teams. The scorers of tries for the home team were D. Paterson, Cousins (2), and Harkness, R. Willis converting one. The Thirds, in their game with Okaiawa on the latter’s ground, were the most successful of all Patea’s teams, winning by 25 —0. The game was very one-sided, Patea winning from start to finish. Those who scored tries wero T. Hurley (2), E. Hamblyn, I). Hunt, G. Oakley Kirk and Les Hunt, who also converted two. PERSONAL. Aliss Helen Simmons returned on Saturday, from Marsden College, Wellington. for the term holidays. Afiss Shirley Roberts returned last Saturday for first term vacation from Victoria University College. Airs I. Honeyfield has returned homo from a holiday at Rotorua. Aliss Gilligan is attending the New Plymouth Ladies’ Golf tournament this week. Aliss R. Honeyfield leaves to-day for a short haliday in Ractihi, where she will stay with her grandmother, Mrs. Miss Elsie Gibbs is home for the term holidays from Afarsden Aliss N. Davidson is spending a snort holiday in Wanganui. FERE ALARM. The first call this year to a fire was received by the Patea Volunteer Fire Brigade last Saturday at 5.30 a.m. The cause was a large toi-toi hedge on Air T E. Roberts’ property, Cambridge Street. With the high wind blowing, the fire had a good hold, and the Brigade was almost two hours getting it under control. There was no damage dene apart from the hedge. LADIES’ GOLF CLUB.
