DAIRY CONTROL BOARD

CRITICISM FROM TARANAKI. SUGGEBTTD A MA LG AMATION. WELLINGTON, May 6. Members of tho executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union were somewhat at variance to-day iu the attitudes they took up toward the Dairy Produce Board. A remit from {South Taranaki spoke of “tho inefficiency of tho board calling for immediate attention,’’ but after discussion the motion was lost. The text of the remit was ‘ ‘ that tho letter from Mr. lorns docs not convince this executive that the Dairy produce Control Board has justified its expenditure and it is considered that the inefficiency of the Control Board calls for immediate attention and that economies be brought about by some form of amalgamation to obviate the present overlapping of primary produce boards.” Mr. E. J. Betts, for South Taranaki, said that his branch was of opinion that the board did not justify its expense. Mr. N. Campbell (Palmerston North) was against the motion. He pointed out that the Control Board had secured benefits for the industry iu freight reductions, etc., that it had been unable to secure before the board’s establishment. Mr. H. E. Bly do (Taranaki) said they were not out to dispense with the Produce Board, but considered that the same work could bo done with less overhead expense and fewer members. Amalgamation with the Meat Board would enable the same work to be done just as well. Mr. J. D. Hall (Christchurch) said 1)C thought it would be very wrong to do anything which might jeopardise the legislation brought down at the time of the last slump. They had been ver» lucky to have such protection at all and it might be disastrous to have such a question reopened. Discussion ensued, nt the eml of which the remit was lost.
