STEEPLECHASE MEETING

WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB FINE FIELDS ENGAGED (By li Kestrel”). Should the weather experienced during the week-end rule during the week ahead, racegoers may look forward with keen anticipation to the winter meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club, will take place on Thursday and Saturday. Not only is tho course In splendid order, with the track in Ihc perfect (condition which few other tracks in the Dominion can boast at this season of the year, but there is also the fact that the fields engaged in the opening day’s events are such as cannot fail to strike an enthusiastic note in all who have the interests or this old-established club at heart. The committee has decided on an innovation for this year’s winter programme that appears to have alreadyborne good results. In past years the Wanganui Steeplechase, the Century Hurdles and the Connolly Handicap have figured on the opening day’s card, hut in order that a larger number of people may have the pleasure of seeing the best ’chasers in action it has been decided to stage the Wanganui Steeplechase on the second day of the meeting, when the Connolly Handicap will also have a place on the card. Tho Century Hurdles will, however, be an attraction on the opening day, and with most of the best hurdlers engaged in that event it should prove a very

popular race. The majority of the horses engaged at the meeting were seen out at the recent Marton and Hawera meetings, and thus investors will have a goou deal of recent form to guide them In their selections.

Those closely interested in Thursday’s fields may also be interested to know the results of the first day ot the fixture twelve months ago. In the Puma Hack Handicap the field was so large that the event was made into two races. The first resulted: Blue Paper 1, Latakia 2, Werata 3. In the second the placings wore; Valstreet 1, Ben Hur 2, Auctioneer 3. The placegetters in the Wanganui Steeplechase were respectively’ Ponjola 1, Matu 2, Airtight 3. The Kaitoke Hack Hurdles was the fifth race on the programme and resulted: Vivo 1, Airforce 2, Wyeford 3. An easy win was recorded in the Century Hurdles in which the placings were: Aurora Borealis J, Perle de Leon 2, Elicit 3. The Connolly Handi-

cap resulted; Bright Glow 1, Hign Faintin’ 2, Admiral Drake 3, and in the concluding event, the Borough Handicap, the stake money was divided a> follows: Equitant 1, Royal Parade 2, Melissa 3. The seven events for T \ is lay have, an average of eleven runners, and as the smallest fields contain nine acceptors it is evident at this stage that there is going to be plenty of material for some stirring contests. Gold Cure was inadvertently omitted from the Rata IlaK’k Hurdles field on Saturday morning. Landmark arm Gourmet will be bracketed in this
