CLOSING OF SHOPS

XMAS AND NEW YEAR WEEKS. With reference to the closing of shops and the employing of shop assistants during the coming Christmas and New Year season, the following may be regarded as being the position in Wanganui: The late night in Christmas week may be observed on Christmas Eve and the late night in New Year's week on New Year’s Eve or on any other of the

six previous working days. ’Phis however, is subject to any award or industrial agreement as ‘ > the hours of assistants in any district and as to the closing of shops.

Should a shopkeeper wish to do so. he may, vide Section 3 (which allows him to transfer the usual late night to any of the previous six working days), therefore observe two late nights during Christinas week by giving up his right to observe a late night during New Year’s week. The foregoing docs not authorise the employment of any assistants beyond the daily or weekly number of hours prescribed by section 7. Where any shopkeeper closes his shop and no assistants are employed on

two whole days during the week (other than the statutory closlng-day) he may keep his shop open and employ his assistants on the statutory half-holiday (See. 26). This is, of course, subject to any award or industrial agreement as stated at the outset.

With the exception that. Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on Thursday, the position,in regard to the closing of shops during Christmas and New Year weeks will be similar to last year.
