DIRECT TRADE WITH EAST
OPPORTUNITY FOR DOMINION HANDICAP OF TRANSHIPMENT [ Per Vness Association ] WELLINGTON, Aug.. 21 Messrs Pronk and Evarts, representatives of the Dutch. East Indies Shipping Company, arrived by the Ulimaroa to-day to inquire into the prospects of direct trade between New Zealand and the East. They will discuss matters with the Prime Minister and producers and exporters, but will not have time to visit the South Island. They consider New •Zealand is handicapped by having to trade through Australia and tranship there, which kills its chance of getting a footing in the East. With a direct service they think there is an excellent chance of Huilding up a trade in dairy produce. More meat was being used in the East, but there are still religious obstacles to be overcome. The tourist traffic is also a factor to be considered.
