“RINGING-IN” CASE
MAN SENT TO GAOL. ( Per Press Association 1 CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 22. At the Supreme Court, Samuel Bates and Leslie Holland, for ringing in the trotter Bruce as Imperial Thorpe, were sentenced to a year’s hard labour by Judge Adams. The Crown Prosecutor said that prisoners had committed an impudent swindle. The Judge said that the men had worked with the same dishonest minds to commit fraud in which there was a possibility of considerable profit to themselves. Their hopes were disappointed, but that did not affect the nature and quality of their act. The sentence must be substantial.
