“TOO LAZY EVEN TO WASH”

ENOUGH WORK NOW FOR THREE MONTHS (Special to "Chronicle”) AUCKLAND, Aug. 21. “Too lazy to get out of bed to look for work,” was the description given by Constable Jones of Joseph Merrick, who was charged in the Police Court before Mr F, K. Hunt, S.M., this morning with being an idle and disorderly person with insufficient means of support. Merrick was found in his mother’s backyard by the doorstep about two o’clock this morning, according to the constable who gave an account of Merrick’s movements during the past few weeks. Mr Hunt: Born lazy, I suppose. “Too lazy even to wash,” agreed the constable. Merrick declared he would do work if he could get it. “Very well,” said the Magistrate, “I shall give you enough to last ytfu three months.”
