PRISON ESCAPEE

GIVES HIMSELF UP FREEDOM TOO RESTRICTED Hungry and with a keen realisation that the police were hot on his trail, Walter Alurphy, the prisoner who escaped from Waikune prison camp on Tuesday last, walked ii.to the police station at Wanganui yesterday afternoon and gave himself up. He will be charged at tho Alagistrate’s Court this morning with breaking and entering the premises of S. J. Harris, boot importer of Aramoho, and further charges regarding other recent burglaries are pending. Alurphy walked most of the way from Raetihi to Wanganui down the Parapara road, but it is understood that he came part of the way on a motor cycle. Since Friday last he has been sheltering in empty houses at Castlecliff and Durie Hill. Sergeant Sivyer, Detectives Walsh and Revell, and the suburban police have been on continuous duty since Friday.
