Golf from the Air
| “Aeroplane golf” has been introduced into the United States. At the Old Westbury Golf Club, Long Island, M. M. Merrill, who was “teamed up” with William A. Hammond to defeat Arthur Capperton and William Winston, three up in a nine-hole match for a cup offered by the president of the club.
With a cargo of balls, Mr Merrill and Mr Capperton took to the air in two Curtiss aeroplanes. They dropped the balls from a specified height, and their team-mates then took up the play on the ground. All of Air Merrill ’s balls landed on the greens, while three dropped by Mr Capperton landed in the rough. Spectators watched the match both from the ground and from the air.
