WOMENS’ DIVISION FARMEES’ UNION 1 Special "Chronicle” Service. ] At th e annual meeting of the Tat b.ape branch of th e Womens’ Division ot the New Zealand Farmers’ Union on Wednesday appreciation of the excellent services rendered by the outgoing president (Mrs A. W. Bicknell) was expressed by several members and on the motion of Mrs P. Munro, the meeting accorded Mrs Bicknell a hearty vote of thanks. Reference was also made to the loss the branch was sustaining by the pending departure of Mrs F. H. Cash (a vice-president) and Mrs J. Law, who were both thanked for their splendid efforts. Considerable discussion ensued on the question as to whether future meetings should be held on Wednesdays or Saturdays and eventually the matter was held over for further consideration on May 9, when the next meeting will he held. DAVIES MEMORIAL CUP The Taihape Golf Club .has decided to perpetuate the memory of the late Mr R. A. Davies, formerly secretary of the club by providing a challenge cup for competition amongst the Taihape, Mangaweka, and Waimarino clubs. It has also been decided to invito those members w.ho wish to do so to subscribe to the funds required for the purchase of the cup, which shall b e known as the Davies Memorial Cup. It is felt that as the late Mr Davies was keenly interested in interclub competition this is the most fitting memorial that can be provided. Will those members wishing to subscribe please hand their subscriptions to Mr T. C. Kincaid, secretary of the club, or Mrs J. A. Arthur, secretary of th o ladies’ branch. The subscription list closes on May 5 and those wishing to subscribe to the fund must do so on or before that date.

The rules of the competition provide that Taihape shall play Mangaweka. and Waimarino twice and the two last named clubs will play each other twice. Each club will be represented by the eight best players. OLD PAVILION DESTROYED BY FIRE The Taihape Tennis Club’s old pavilion which has not been used since the club acquired its new courts on the Oval Domain was almost completely destroyed by a spectacular fire which broke out at about 6.14 p.m. on Thursday evening. The building which was not a large one, burned like matchwood and the glow lit up the whole countryside. The brigade under Captain Reid arrived in their usual prompt manner and eventually extinguished the fire but not before the old building had almost been completely destroyed. The pavilion was situated on the site of the old tennis courts, opposite the Anglican Church. BOWLING

The bowling season will be officially closed next Thursday when the presentation of trophies will take place. Afternoon tea will be served by the members of the ladies’ croquet club. During the week-end the Ohakune club will send a team to challenge for the Junior Ruape.hu Banner. The trophy will be defended by the same team who won it sometime ago. It is possible that a return match between the Taihape club and the Legion of Frontiersmen will also take place during the week-end. KING’S THEATRE PICTURES I At the matinee to-day there will be * a double-starprogramme showing, {Buck Jones in “Hills of Peril” and | Colonel Tim McCoy in “California.” j At night “Hills of Peril” and “Lew (Tyler’s Wives,” the latter featuring | Frank Mayo, Ruth Clifford, Heda HopI per and Robert Haines, will be the I main attractions. There is also a j gazette and coemdy showing. I ' RUGBY FOOTBALL. ’ A friendly game will be played on the Oval Domain to-day between Pirates and Hautapu. Both clubs are confident of success, and an exciting game is assured. A week from to-day the season will be officially opened with a seven-a-side tournament, for which good entries are expected. PERSONAL Mr H. W. C. Mackintosh, Commissioner of Crown Lands, and the members of the Wellington Land Board were in Taihape yesterday for the purpose of examining applicants and holding a ballot for the two sections which comprise the Omatane block, which is situated about 11 miles from the Utiku Railway station.
