WITH THE HARRIERS

OPENING RUN OF SEASON TODAY (By ‘‘Trailer”) The opening run of the harrier season takes place to-day, leaving from the residence of club captain W. W. Bramwell, 6 Koromiko Road at 2.30 p.m. Members are urged of the necessity of becoming really fit as early as possible in view of the ambitious programme planned, and the visit of other clubs.

Members already in fair condition after the athletic season can well afford to relax a little now for a month or six weeks to avoid staleness. An occasional run will serve to keep the muscles in running trim.

Guy Broad, who is leaving for Sydney next Thursday, will be entertained by members of the Wanganui A.A.C. Club at the R.S.A. Hall, St. Hill street, on Monday night next.

The delights of the open road and the healthful feeling of running with a crowd of fellows over all classes of country, has induced some of last season 's athletic members to give up their usual winter’s football and hockey and join up for cross country work. The New Zealand Cross-Country championships which have been allocated to Wanagnui this year will be a big incentive for members to train in a systematic manner.

Among the members who should give a good account of themselves t his season may be mentioned: Clarrie Gibbons, 11. E. Newton. B. Clark, G. C. Moore, W. G. Denford, S. J. Gudsell, F. McLean, J. Pawson and Len Couch. There are some very promising men amongst the newer members and older members will have to look to their laurels during the winter. Now that the season of track events has drawn to a close, the members of the Harrier Club are hard at work preparing for the cross country events. The branch of athletics from all appearance is going to be very strong in Wanganui this season. The New Zealand Cross-Country championships should create a big interest in the winter sport as such great runners as R. A. Rose, J. W. Savidan, C. Gibbons and H. E. B. Newton will be competing in this event.

Several of the Marton A.A. Club have decided to take up harrier woik and have joined up with the local club. These members should be a big help as they include, besides Gibbons and Denford. such good runners as W. E. Patten and A. Dobson. The dub intend to make an attempt to stage a relay race from Marton to Wanganui this season. With teams of six men this should be a good race as each member woul/1 have to run about four miles each. This class of racing is very popular in the old country.
