PATEA

GOLF CLUB [ Special “Chronicle” Service, j The annual meeting of the golf club was held on Friday evening, Air C. R. Honeyfield presiding. The secretary (Mr G. Pettigrew) reported that the past season had been most successful. The new links | had proved a great boon and had not. (cost as much, as was anticipated to Iput into playing order through the | kindness of Messrs Honeyfield Bros, pvho had not only given the use of the ground free of cost for the links, but uuii also gone to great trouble to make them suitable for golfers. The greens had been top-dressed and resown and the fairways were in better order than ever before.

I Air Honeyficld, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, which showed tne club in funds to tne extest of £69 15s Bd, congratulated the club on having had such a successful season. He regretted the club had lost three such energetic members as Air and Airs Bowler and Air D. Finlay, but noped that their places would soon be fined by other new members. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr P. S. Gilligan; president, Air C. R. Honeyfield; Alessrs D. U. Gilbert and 1. Honeyfield; captain, Air 11. A. Findlay; vice-captain, Air G. Pettigrew; secretary, Air G. Fraser; assistant secretary, Air N. Hunger; auditor, Air F. C. Jenkins; management committee, Alessrs Rook, Fraser, Hamel and Hanis.

The following new members were elected: Airs W. Naismith, Aliases K. and W. Hurley, I. Derrett, Fathers Aloorc and Dillon, the Rev. W. V. Alartin and Alessrs J. Clarkson,, Mandjerson. Mills and Edwards.

The secretary reported that Air Lambic’s services as coach had been obtained for the benefit of club mem-, bers. Air Lambic during his stay in Patea, if suitable arrangements could be made, would show several hundred* feet of film taken at the recent tournament Timaru, also a number ot American films ho had secured, which should prove of great interest and assistance to members. Ladies’ Gold Club The election of officers of the ladies’ club resulted as follows: Captain, Airs Roberts; secretary, Aiiss Campbell; committee, Alesdames, Harris, Mcßae, Glenny and Misses Gibson, Taylor and Gilligan. It was resolved on the motion of Miss T. Gibson, seconded by Aiiss Gilligan, that Air Pettigrew be asked to wait on the Patea Golf Club committee to arrange for the greens to be cut on Wednesday (ladies’ match day) and when inter-club matches are played and also to have the ball marker replaced or repaired. Airs Alcßae moved that the sccrtary write to the secretary of the W.G.U. asking for an alteration i nthe club’s par. owing to the length and difficulty of the holes. SCHOOLS SPORTS. The eighth annual school sports gatnering was held on the Patea Domain or Saturday and despite in ©lemon weather conditions the whole programme, with the exception of two events, was carried through with little delay. The greatest credit is duo to the officials and many helpers, headed by Air H. G. Clemance (secretary) for the timely despatch of the events. Alton School, with a lead of over 60 points, gained the cup for the schools’ championship. Kakaramea were runners up and Patea gained third place. The entries constituted a record and the large attendance of the public evidenced the increasing popularity of the children’s sports speetings. Air C. R. Honeyficld, president of the Association, at the conclusion of the meeting, thanked the public for attending and ‘the officials and others who had given such helpful assistance. He said the concluding events on the programme, the running of which had been prevented by the rain would be decided sonic Saturday afternoon in the near future. The championship result, however, could not be affected, as Alton already had attained a lead of 61 points and would be awarded the cup. Air Honeyfield then called on Air W. A. Collins, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, to award the prizes. Air Collins said he was very pleased with the true sporting spirit he had noticed that day. The contestants seemed just as eager to get a win for their school as they were for a personal prize, which was the backbone of good amateur sport. Air Collins contended that the Feilding sports gatherings were recognised as about the last of their kind in the Dominion, but he had no doubt that Patea, with the progress it was making, would in a few years’ time be holding its own with Feilding. He then presented the Strouts Cup to Alaster B. Anderson of the Alton School amidst hearty applause. W. AlcClenaghan, (Waverley Convent) winner of 120 and 220yds. boys championship, and Aiiss C. AlcDonald Alton) winner of the old girls’ cliamploship, were each presented with championship medals. Results are as follows: Boy’s Events. 50 yds. race under B.—W. Warner (Patea) 1, R. The annual report was adopted, as under:—As the northsouth scheme was continued this season the expenditure for ear hire was much less than when the team had to travel as far as Waitara and New Plymouth. The gate receipts were not very large however it being evident that it was difficult to get largo gates outside the entres of the province. Nevertheless from a financial point of view the year was very successful there being a balance in after payment of all liabilities including several old accounts for ear hire incurred by tho club some years ago. From a playing point of view the club had been moderately successful. The senior team won six and lost five games. The junior team won three, lost three and drew one. The third grade team won only one match. L. Burke, Alurphy and Wills all represented the province on various occasions. The former being prevented by illness from accompanying the team which toured in the south and by an injury early in the All Black trials was debarred from the chance of a place in the N.Z. team for South Africa. A successful junior seven-a-side tournament for the Morse Cup was held on June 3 the cup being held for tho year by the Stratford team. It was to be hoped the Rugby Union would make the competition' open to junior teams throughout Taranaki in future which could be done without interference to the tournament for the Dewar Shield. Thanks were due to South Taranaki Referees Association members who had always shown their willingness to assist, and had done so in connection with the tournament and a benefit match. Thanks were alao due to the donors of medals and to the club’s auditor, Air W. F. Shield.

The balance showed a credit balance of £25 13s 6d.

The chairman congratulated the club on a successful year, a feature of which was the great interest the public had taken in the club and the. game. The chairman proposed a benefit dance to be held shortly, for Air Leo. Bourke, who was injured last year am. who had since been out of employment

It was rsolved as a result of a let ter from the Taranaki Rugby Union t< : incorporate with that body.
