A sharp earthquake shock was experienced at Hokitika on Sunday morning at 9.10 o’clock, lasting for several seconds.

While exploring the wrecked steamer Alarora, at Beach Head, on Friday, Harry Trickleband, aged 33, employed as a cook on Mr J. Hunter’s station, fell down the hold, injuring his head. He died in the Waipukurau Hospital yesterday.

A fire at three o’clock yesterday morning in the centre of Revell Street (Hokitika) gutted Stephens Bros., tobacconist and hairdressing saloon. The billiard room at the rear was damaged by water. The contests of the saloon and shop are a total loss. The adjoining premises were not damaged.

At the Police Court at Dunedin yesterday, Hugh Wilson, a factory manager, pleaded guilty to the theft of £ll, the property of Hallenstein Bros. The police stated that accused sold a number of suits and failed to account for the money. He was admitted to probation for twelve months.

The resolution of the Alotor Union protesting at the heavy taxation was deprecated by the Hon. A. D. Mc-Leod, speaking at Raglan on Saturday last. He said that he would like Air Alan ton to see the difficulties of the settlers and ho would not object to the small payment for the support of the man on the land. He condemned the attitude of men who sat in offices and dictated to the Government and refused to sec the conditions of the men in the backblocks.

At the Supreme Court at Auckland yesterday John Jenkins was found guilty of forgery. He had been out on license. Air Justice Blair said that prisoner was, owing to illness, more readily subject to temptation than an ordinary individual. He was going to take a risk with Jenkins. Instead of imprisoning him, he would convict and order him to come <’p for sentence when called upon within 12 months. This, in view of the fact that accused’s license had been cancelled, was an indication to the Prisons Board that it was worth while giving him another trial.

A fire yesterday morning destroyed an eight-roomed apartment house iu Janies Street (Auckland) owned by Airs Hull and occupied by Airs North. Airs North found flames leaping from the linen press under the staircase. She hastened to waken the others while her son went through a window to give the alarm. Two women escaped from a front bedroom of the second storey in their night attire, lowering themselves down by a sheet, and falling several feet. One of them, Ethel Beatty, had an ankle ricked through the sheeting breaking. Airs Kelsall was slightly burned on one ear and her hair was silghtly burned.
