MONEY SPENT ON DRINKS SERVICE DRIVER IN TROUBLE Charged, with the theft of £l3 6s 5d from jus employers, Alartin and Vernon, and witn breach of his probation onajer, William Dyer appeared before Air J. S. Barton, S.M., at the Alagistrate’s Court yesterday morning. Air V. B. Willis appeared lor the accusedl,, who pleadeu. guilty to the charge of theft. Sergeant G. Sivyer gave evidence as to a statement made by Dyer to the police after his arrest at llawera, in wriicii he had stated he was a ser-vice-car driver and had failed to hand over moneys he had collected for fares, lie had handed to the police a number of tickets and from these had been calculated the amount, missing. Accused had been admitted to Probation at Hokitika for stealing money, when he was in. the employ of Newman’S Motor Service, on tho condition that he made restitution of the amount stolen. He had then disappeared! ancr was arrested at Kaiapoi. Air Willis explained that Dyer had served a month’s imprisonment for the breach. He had called on the Probation Officer in Christchurch to see what he was to do about the order, which the detectives had taken from him when ho was arrested. A game of battledore and shattlecock had gone on between, the detectives and the officer. Accused, continued Air Willis, had admitted the charge of theft, which he put down to a drinking party, when he had spent his employers’ money, which he had with him at the time. He had assisted the police and Mr Willis, submitted to the Alagistrate that probation on strict lines and restitution of the money would be a fitting sentence. His Worship replied that he would not consider probation and accused would be detained for 12 months foi reformative treatment. On the charge of the breach of the Probation Ondjer, he would be convicted and discharged.
