NEWS OF THE DAY I*A W CLEEK CRATgrEn WITH TH KTT. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 3. Samuel Phoenix Briggs, a law clerk, wxs charged before the Magistrate. Mr E. D. Mosley, to-day. with stealing £337, the property of the Simmonds Estate and others. He pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial.
BREACH OF APPRENTICES’ ACT. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 3. W. J. Wakelin, District Registrar of Apprentices, proceeded against Jametf Carter and Sons. Ltd., in the Arbitrat ion Court to-day for a breach of the ' Apprentices’ Act. Carters had employed two youths as apprentices to the welding branch of the trade and the Apprenticeship Committee had refused to allow the arrangement, holding that the boys should learn welding as part of their training as engineers. Against this decision Carter’s appealed, but the appeal was disallowed. Carters had still the employed the boys in defiance of the committee’s order and the Court ruling. A penalty of £lO was imposed.
rAT-KR PRETENCES AND TH KIT. CHRISTCHURCH. Oct. 3. Carrying a bag of golf clubs round with her, Nellie Carter made a practice of imposing on people by representing she was well off. To-day Magistrate E. D. Mosley, S.ML, sent her to gaol for ten months on charges of false pretences and theft, remarking that she had a bad Ust.
fEN-EOOMED HOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE. GLSBORNE. Nov. 3. A ten-roomed house at Matawhero, owned by Frank Woodbury, and insured for £2lO, was destroyed by fire, the family escaping in their night clothes >nd saving nothing.
