TAIHAPE

FIRE BRIGADE. The monthly meeting of the Taihape Volunteer Fire Brigade was held on Wednesday evening, when there were present: Captain Reid (chair), Lieut. Mortland, Foreman Hartley, assistantforeman R. McClure. Firemen Collings, B. Flight, Ireland, V. Flight, Hainsworth, Begg, Whiting, Hagan and the secretary (Fireman W. H. Adair). A resolution was passed instructing the secretary to write to the U-DJF.B-A. stating that the brigade was in favour of a demonstration and conference being held in 1928, but was not issuing an invitation for it to be held in Taihape. The following were appointed for Town Hal! duty for the months: Assistant Foreman R. McClure and Firemen Hainsworth, Whiting and V. Flight. The treasurer (Lieut. Mortland) reported that there was a credit balaaee of £32 Ils 3d in the General Fund Account, while the social fund was in credit to the extent of £135 16s.

Foreman Hartley said that one of the new dressing room doors at the Town Hall was jammed and in the event of fire people in the dressing rooms would be unable to escape. “All the door needs is a piece taken off the bottom and I think this should be done as soon as possible,” he concluded. —lt was derided to report the matter ot the Town Clerk.

Captain Reid informed the meeting that the manager of the King’s Theatre (Mr H. Williams) desired the brigade to test the hose at the theatre; and wanted to know whether he (Mr Williams) had any authority over the hose.—lt was decided to accede to Mr Williams request, and also to inform him that any fire fighting appliances at the King’s Theatre do not come under the jurisdiction of the brigade. Captain Reid said that before the Boy Scouts could pass certain examinations they had to have a knowledge of Fire Brigade work, and the Scoutmaster (the Rev. E. J. Rich) had expressed the hope that the brigade would be able to find time to instruct the Scouts. Last Thursday he had given the Scouts a lecture on the various branches of Frie Brigade work, and this week he proposed to give them some practice with the hose, reel and hydrant, and desired the assistance of some of the members of the Brigade. Several members offered to assist Captain Reid, who said the Scouts were very willing to learn and the knowledge that they would gain would be of the utmost benefit to them, and in the event of a big fire in Taihape the Scouts would be vsry useful to the Brigade. L. W. Mora made application to become a member of the Brigade. He was placed on probation for three months.

It was decided to let the contract for installing a hot water service and making alterations at the fire station, for £7O, subject to the work being done in conformity with the plan submitted. It was left in the hands of the captain and secretary to make the final arrangements. ST. PATRICK DAY’S SPORTS CLUB

The Taihape St. Patrick’s Day Sports Club committee met on Wednesday evening when there wore present Messrs J. Quirk, W. Gregory, C. Cherry, D. Neagle. W. P. Dowling, W. J. Beckett, V. Nicholls and the secretary (Mr A. M. Ryan).

Mr Quirk was appointed chairman of the committee for the ensuing year. A programme was drawn up for the next sports and it included four chopping, two sawing, eight running and six cycling events.

The sum of £lO was allocated for the children’s events.

It was decided that no dancing events be included in the programme. Messrs J. Donovan, C. Cherry, and D. Neagle were appointed a sub-commit-tee re the advisability or otherwise of having horse jumping competitions at the next sports. The secretary was instructed to write to the Queen Alexandra Band and ascertain its terms for providing music at the sports. Messrs Quirk, Dowling and the secretary were elected to form an advertising committee and Messrs Quirk, V. Nicholls, W. Beckett and J. Ryan were appointed a canvassing committee. Mr V. Nicholls reported that several trophies for the next sports had been received.

Subject to their acceptance the following handicappers were appointed: Mr Collingwood, athletic and cycling events; Mr Richardson, chopping events.

GENKRAT* NEWS At the committee meeting of the Taihape St. Patrick s Day Spurts Club on Wednesday evening Mr W. P. Dowling suggested that the club should include a tug-of-war in the programme of events at the next sports and in making the suggestion Mr Dowling said iur D. J. O’Neill had informed him that the club could obtain battens for the lug-oi-rtur from Wanganui, by paying the freight on same. I'he matter was left in the hands of Mr Dowling who was requested to report at the next [ committee meeting. The monthly sitting of the Magistrate s Court opened before Mr K. M. Watson yeslendjay afternoon. The list was exceptionally small and consisted chielfy of wandering stock eases. Mr R, Ormond of Taihape has received advice that his dog secured two first prizes and one second at the Palmerston North show. His dog was adjudged the second best maiden dog at ihe show’. There were over 7U entries in the maiden class. Mr L. J. Kemp who was in charge of the Ohotu School during Miss Mead’s absence in England was accorded a send-off on Monday afternoon. Mr H- Belk, ehairman of the Ohotu School committee eulogised the services rendered by Mr Kemp andi took the opportunity of wishing him every success in his new sphere. Miss Mearijs was warmly welcomed on her return from England. THE PICTURES Those who delight in a real genuine laugh should see “McFadden’s Flats” which shows at the King’s to-night. So far wherever shown it has never failed to please. j . Charlie Murray and Chester Conklin supply the comedy, Murray as the j Irishman and Conklin as the Scotchi man who are at daggers drawn.
