SOCCER

SATURDAY’S GAMES NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Afton Lad.”) Last week’s games gave Eastbrooke a commanding lead at the head of the table, although they were a bit lucky to emerge with one point after a tough tussle with Mills. The play throughout was fast and keen, many * incidents occurring which were hardly in keeping with the standard of play expected from such an experienced lot of players. Developments Expected. The game has been quite the topic in Soccer circles all the week and developments are expected at. an early date. Mills have inferred that the referee was hardly fair in many of his decisions and the Management Committee have asked the official for a report on the game. “Afton Lad” leaves the Management Committee to settle the matter and passes on with Ihe hope that the Management Committee will take a firm stand and sec that justice is done to an official who has the support of all who are out for the welfare of the game who want to keep the game clean and wholesome. Thistle Still Improving. The victory of Thistle at the expense of ’Shops proved, as predicted in these columns, that the Jags were on the upgrade and are now a force to be reckoned with. Quite a lot of thqir success is due. to their strong rear guard where Walker, Langslow and McLeod are difficult to beat. Their halfback line is also functioning well and in Mackay they have one of the most improved players in the city. A Real Find. Workshops appears to have made the capture of the season in Ellis, a player with a Canadian reputation. Quick on the ball Ellis never hesitates to shoot from all angles and on Saturday his direction was always right. Already he has caught the eye of the selector and figures in to-day’s Possible—Probables match. The Canadian Match. Next Saturday the men from the Land of the Maple Leaf will be with us and on Spriggens Park the best soccer combination that has ever visited this district will play the Wanganui team. The trial game to-day is creating great interest and a good crowd is sure to line A'ictoria Park to see how both teams perform. The visitors are to have a great reception and to give the public an opportunity of meeting the Canadians a monster social and dance is to be run in Harman’s Hali next Saturday night. Many of Wanganui’s best artists have promised to assist in giving the visitors from the big sister Dominion an enjoyable evenng after the match. Home Chat.

For the first time in eight years England defeated Scotland in the big International match at Hampdon Park on April 2 before a crowd of 112,000. England had a dasning young team who proved too much for a Scots team that carried too many “old ’uns” for the fleet-footed Saxons. ‘ Quite a novel fixture is to be decided this month in Madrid, where Mothwell, a Scottish combination, play Swansea (Wales) for the King of Spain’s Cup. The King, who is a keen soccer enthusiast, has consented to kick off and to present the trophy to the winning team. Junior Jottings. It is more evident than ever that a big push is required in the Junior game. Lack of space has a bad effect but it is whispered that another ground will be available soon. Many of the older Juniors can hardly get to Victoria Park in time for a 1.30 p.m. start and to remedy this it might be necessary, when Cook’s Gardens is available, to play one Junior match on Cook’s at 1.30 p.m. and one on Victoria Park at 3 t o’clock and utlise. the two grounds on Victoria Park for another grade at 1.30 p.m. Four boys’ teams can be started as soon as another ground is procurable. The Juniors are having a closer run for their Shield than their Senior brethren and only one point separates ’Shops and Thistle. Table To Date.

To-day’s Trial. The game to-day is a trial one in view of next Saturday's curtain raiser to the Canadian Game. Ail selected Juniors must be on the ground by 1.30 p.m. Leading Goal Scorers.
