HOCKEY

NOTES AND COMMENTS PARS OF INTEREST. (By “Circle.”) Saturday was not a pleasant day for hockey and consequently many of the junior teams played short. In the senior grade Hinemoa and Old Boys scored wins over St. Andrew’s and Wesley respectively. Hinemoa with their strongest team out. received a big shock from St. Andrew's and the old champions just, scraped home winners after one of the best club matches seen in Wanganui for a long time. The Saints in the first spell had the better of things, and at one stage were leading 2—o. Just on half time Hinemoa scored and the second spell commenced with St. Andrew’s clinging to a one goal lead. Play was fast and open in the second session, but Hinemoa were able to score twice and secure the victory, even though they were little better than their opponents. On the run of the play a draw would have been a fair indication of the merits of the teams. Hinemoa have an excellent defence in Simmonds and Cave and this pair broke up several hot attacks from the maroons. Their forward line was patchy, however, and one or two weak links were apparent. Hughes was not so prominent as usual and was well marked. Weller is a player of promise and should soon be one of the best. Howartson has a bad tendency to “sticks” and cost, his side several penalties. He made amends in the second spell however and got in some good work. The St. Andrew’s side were an even lot. Their style of play suited their opponents and a fast open game was the result. The Saints forwards slung the ball about to good effect but chances were missed through inaccurate shooting. In the half line Smith was most prominent until injured, but continued 1 to play a good game. Both backs played well, Adams being the more consistent and Fox perhaps the more spectacular. A junior, Cave, made a good showing in goal and booted with good effect. Ladies’ Games. These were much below standard, possibly owing to the inclement weather. Congratulations to Aramoho on their second win. This team will be one of the best before long. Wesley were below full strength and this was no doubt responsible for their defeat at the hands of the suburban girls. Misses Whyman and Potaka wore outstanding on the Wesley side and both toiled hard. With only nine players, however, it was impossible to expect the team 1o do more than defend for most of the time. Aramoho have some good material but their knowledge of position play and team tactics is poor. Halves and forwards bunch and obstruct each other, while the backs lie too far back when the team is on the attack. Good coaching will correct these faults, however, and the team should then be as good as any. Misses Te Mana, Olliver, Spurdie, Mackay and Roydhouse are all players of ability.
