TOBACCO GROWING
AN EXPORT GUARANTEE BEQUEST MADE TO GOVERNMENT ' (Special to “Chronicle.”) WELLINGTON. May 19. Representations were made to the Hon. O. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture to-day by members of the Tobacco Growers’ Association of Nelson. together with the Instructor of Tobacco Culture in the Department, to discuss the prospects of the Nelson tobacco leaf as an export product. One of the questions raised was that of a Government guarantee. There is a guarantee at present, but negotiations as to the alteration of the imount are being made. It is learned that, generally speaking, the tobacco venture in Nelson has been quite successful, resulting in an appreciable quantity of bright yellow and lemoncolourai kiln-dried leaf available for export, together with a fair quantity of good shed-dried tobacco, totalling approximately ten tons. It is believed, that this quantity will be sufficient to give some idea of the value of the Now Zealand leaf on the London market. Grading, conditioning and packing are still in progress an*i it is anticipated that this will be completed in approximately six weeks’ time, when the tobacco will be shipped Home.
