VESSELS IN COLLISION
“GREAT CARELESSNESS” TRAWLER S LIGHTS NOT VISIBLE [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND. May 20. A nautical Court of inquiry in the j C®lli sion between the schooner Elsie Mary, bound from Auckland to Gisborne, and the trawler Ahuriri. which was anchored near Waihekc Island, in March, is proceeding. No damage was sustained by either vessel, but the inquiry was ordered by the Marine Department. It was admitted by the master of the trawler, Captain Veal, that after the collision he found that his anchor light was obscured by a net and that the light was not visible to the Elsie Mary. The Court stated it was satisfied that th<‘ cause of the collision was that the Ahuriri did not have a light or lights showing as required by the regulations. It was great carelessness on the part of the Ahuriri, and the captain would be ordered to pay costs amounting to £34 10s. The certificates ®f both masters were returned.
