A NEW THEORY
THE TRUNK MYSTERY Bonati’s Death May Have Been Caused by Fall PATHOLOGIST’S EVIDENCE SCOTLAND YARD’S ENQUIRIES [By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright] (A. & N.Z.) LONDON, May 18. Scotland Yard’s inquiries into the Bonati mystery have covered an extraordinarily wide range and the best detectives are engaged, yet it is no nearer the idenfication of the murderer than on the day the trunk was discovered. Many preconceived ideas have been upset by Sir Bernard Spilsbury (the Government pathologist), who advanced the unexpected theory at a police conference to the effect that Bonati was not murdered but was killed by a fall down stairs, in which head injuries were inflicted. Another theory is that after falling i she lay face downwards on a mat causing suffocation. In support of this it is assumed that the fall occurred in the house of the criminal, who, fearing the plame for her death, dismembered the body and placed it in the trunk. It does not necessarily follow that this theory is accepted by the police, but in view of Sir Bernard Spilsbury’s eminence, they are now prosecuting inquiries in this direction.
